Hey,

I'm Tom.

I'm a pom, moved over here, uni student, kiting since '03, ex-instructor, hardly been out over here and miss the scene. Planning to spend the summer kitesurfing.

Which beaches here have a good kiting community? I've only been to St. K and it seems a bit hectic, though a cool spot. Is there anywhere else I can get to with public transport from the CBD, or anyone here who'd be willing to pick me up on their way to the beach when it's windy?

The winds here in the summer are thermal, right? What website do you guys check to see whether it's windy down at the beach?

hi tom,

public transport to altona and brighton. altona good in easterly to south-westerly. brighton good whenever there's some west in it from ssw to nnw. altona shorter walk from train to beach.

public transport kiting is the future,

Brighton is pretty far from public transport, I know because I spent a couple of months dragging my gear around. Altona is probably a little better, its much closer to the station.

Send me a PM, I'd be happy to help you out with lifts when I go, but I'd probably need you to take a tram out of the city just to avoid the bumper to bumper traffic in the city itself if its mid week kiting.

The alternative is to pony up $2K and get yourself a scooter, then pack you gear on your back and use that to get around.

You can check winds earthsci.unimelb.edu.au/engage/dynamic-earth-updates/bay-winds or www.seabreeze.com.au/graphs/vic.asp

Winds are seabreezes in summer and frontal in winter. Frontal is more gusty, although the northerlies in summer can be pretty gusty.

Thanks guys,

I'll try chucking it all on my back. My new kites just arrived so I've got more to carry now

I was thinking of getting a motorbike but didn't think I'd manage to carry my board on it. Anyone got any experience doing this? Maybe with a smaller board, my 138 is a bit chunky.

Hey tom. I use this site: http://geckokiteboarding.com/weather/weather-data-board.php
for wind reports and forecasts, it is by far the best for melbourne wind i think. Windguru is okay but not quite as accurate. Gecko tends to be spot on. Seabreeze's forecasts for melbourne are not really very accurate for some reason.

St Kilda is a good spot, as is brighton and ricketts point. altona rocks in a S to SE. no waves anywhere but that's what you get for living in a big bay.

See you on the water.

I've got a scooter with a board rack (fits onto the luggage rack of any motorbike), works well for close places and you can carry two kites on your back, but you don't want to take it over the westgate in 20 knots. At least StK and Brighton become more accessible and you can reach Altona if you go through footscray.

You can also kite Port Melbourne if you take the 109 tram to the end of the line, but its a small spot and it becomes busy if you have more the 3 or 4 kiters there.

Check out the KBV web site (LOCATIONS & WEATHER) for a whole selection of wind graphs/sites etc - most of the ones mentioned above are available..
