Where were you last Saturday? It was epic for an hour before sunset. Solid 25 knots. 9-10m kites all round. Steep little waves to blast off. Clean water. Big air.

At about 4pm I decided to stop looking at the wind graphs and hit the gym instead...
Which means that I built up the size to go even larger tomorrow
So figers crossed that
1) there is wind tomorrow
2) there are no crazy thunderstorms
3) the direction is not sucky WSW, in which case neither Altona nor Rosebud would work.

Bring it onn stronng..

thanks knutH... steady WSW... now I can't decide whether to wait (hope) for it to swing around more to the SW for Altona or whether just to put up with Brighton...

No worries, I am facing the same decision right now
But since the tide is high, I would probably prefer St Kilda over Brighton.

Be careful. Think there might have been an accident on the beach today. Someone posted something on facebook but don't have the info on it yet.

I could not believe the number of people out on 10/12/14m kites - on a day where there were gusts/squalls all day.

Was a good session though - on the right size kite.

I was super powered on an 8 Havoc, some people are so friggin dumb.

there's reaaly something that needs sorting.

some chap launched a 12 rally obviously a brand new kite, after sunset, felt like shouting at the dumb ass.

way too many beginners out today when they should stay at home or watch from the beach.

made it really dangerous trying to jump when your 10m+ up there and some dumb ass decides to turn when downwind without looking.
had to crash quite a few times too many.

also anoying where the plonkers ridng in just messy chop on surf boards riding ankle biters when there were awesome 2-3 ft waves 200 meters away.

otherwise though was really nice to be powered on an 8 again so bored of crappy underpowered 12 weather.

i want to know what the bail out plan was for the few kiters riding the flat water between the groyne and the yachts. what to do when you get hit by a squall and lofted towards masts, stays, jetties, all sorts of stainless steel spikes and rigging? hope to clear the lot, and someone gets it on vid, aiming for 15 mins of viral yootoob fame lets not even talk about our old favourite RMYS/Kiter tensions.

p.s. wise words Jim... my only tip is it sounds a bit 'ranting'. too often wisdom on this forum gets undermined by the language chosen to convey it.

pps. Amen.

Kitesurf Jim,

i beleive i was the "noob" on the rally, so here comes an ear bashing.

first of all i weigh about 90kg so any of you freking feather weights are going to be overpowered with a trainer on a 5kn day so think before you open your mouth.

secondly being a new kite - yep couldn't half tell - i didn't really want to get the thing wet with rain water as i don't really have anywhere to dry it. again you probably recognised all of this while wresteling your overpowered 8!

if anyone is interested i do have some footage of "my noobieness" and just how clear the skys were coming through when i was setting up and getting going.

in short, i appreciate your concern but and seriously an 8 ?WTF? man grow some cast iron testies and get off the trainer, don't shoot off your dumb mouth and get the sand out of your mangina.

I don't mean to start a **** fight, but 90kg is hardly that heavy and I think you need to work on technique if you couldn't get out on anything smaller that a 12m yesterday. If you think it's all manly to put up a big kite and call 8m kites trainers, you obviously don't know how much fun small kites are. Wish I had a 6 or 7 to ride yesterday.

That's fair, i had a 9 in the car, but i also had the new 12, given the conditions and the fact it was new the 12 was the toy of choice.

needless to say Slingshot Rally.... LOVEIT

I can't tell if you're being ironic about your "noobness" or not. Are you a noob or are you an experienced kiter who knows what he was doing?

You sound like a noob.

Only a noob would have taken a kite out of the bag yesterday if they did not intend to ride it. The forecasts was for 30-35 knots. The storms were clearly visible. Fawkner Beacon was showing 28-32 knots.

We had 90-100 kg guys riding 7 metre kites with surfboards. There were some lulls (as there usually is after a squall) where people would have been better off with 9m kites. I rode through those lulls on my 7. I'm only an 80kg feather weight.

I weight 90kg as well, and once I had to sit out a squall on a 12m in 30-34kn.
I had to lean hard against the kite, bar pushed all the way out, and got lofted slightly on a few occasions.
Yesterday the clouds looked more vicious and the gusts were up to 35kn, so flying a 12m is ludicrous. Even if you want to jump big (do you?), you will do better on a 9m.

Anyway, it's still on

Anyone out on anything bigger than an 9m yesterday = natural selection.

****e gusty crap but good to get wet, especially with the post session beers!

Experienced my first proper lofting and tea-bagging on my 7m yesterday in the kiddie pool 5mins into the session, that knocked "the wind from my sails" and sess didn't improve.

Roll-on hometime, looking nice.........

Looking at his profile he has been a member since 2008, he may not have joined here straight away based on his low post count so I'd assume he knows what he is doing.

If he was out at 7:30pm which is about sunset this time of year then that half an hour looks to have calmed down to between 25-30 knots before darkness would have set in.

You Say there were 90kg guys out on a 7m on a surfboard, he was probably on a twin tip. Sounds like he may have been at the top end of his wind range but you can hardly blame him for wanting to get out his new kite for its maiden voyage imo.

No reports of small children or kittens being harmed, so lets keep the froth on the conditions eh?
Looking great out there again today, can't wait to escape the clutches of work!
