Hi All,
I have just moved over and am living in Mont Albert North.
I'm still a beginner, I can get up and go downwind no probs but struggling to get my upwind reliable. I have a 12m Convert (which was often too big for the heavy Perth winds and my skill level).

I'm just chasing a bit of info :
* Recommendations of beaches other than St Kilda that aren't too crowded (like many of the beginners have posted, I'd rather get some confidence up before I have to keep an eye out for traffic).

* I assume the ideal cross-shore/on-shore breezes are mainly southerly, depending what beach you're on? What sort of average wind speeds do you get? (i.e. with a view to the question - is a 12m gonna be waaaay too big over here for 85kg guy?)

12m is perfect for an 85kg rider in Melbourne. Average sea breeze (if you could call them that this year) has been ~15-18kn.
Other beaches to check out... Hampton, Brighton, Mordialloc, Port Melbourne; but it's not likely you'll end up with a beach to yourself. I'd say your far better off just going to one of the accepted kiting beaches and working your way out the back of the crowd. There's plenty of open water at St Kilda - you've just gotta not be in the 60m that the advanced riders want to use, or the 200m that is bodydrag alley.
