Couldn't believe how bad shape the kiddie pool is in. Quite a shame as many of us have had great sessions in this spot over the years.

Prior to the earthworks - was quite a large expanse of water which could hold a reasonable number of kites. Have been kiting elsewhere round the bay - but the westerly winds over Xmas took me back to St K.

Needless to say I was shocked at the awful state.

Massive sand bar in the middle - and loads of huge boulders/rocks strewn all over the shop - these seemed very board hungry.

What happened to the commitment that the beach would be left in the same shape as the construction company found it.

Matto, they don't care.. It was a joke.. All they care about is the revenue for the marina area. I think we have all had multiple cuts and scratches on boards and bodies due to the rocks in there, let alone the issue of the sand they left there. I requested KBV contact them at the time but KBV were given the raw end of the stick even in regards to the "return to normal"

I know KBV have queried numerous time with various parties re the removal of the rocks and got donuts. I agree they **** it. Dogs!

My board has a few nice nicks taken out of it.

Back onto the topic.. Last night 06/01/15 saw a blue shirted "instructor" teaching a complete beginner just doing board starts directly in the kiddie pool. When a few kites got out he moved him into the shallow (original kiddie pool area) so here you have a complete beginner, learning to do board starts in ankle deep water in a zone that is NOT allowed to be used for instructing. I use the " " around the instructor as a REAL instructor would know how dangerous it is to teach someone at this level in ankle deep water. It was a nice night out, go in the water with your student like your SUPPOSED to!!!

Now, anyone that wants to get up me for saying "not allowed" have a good hard look at yourself and do yourself a favour and go look at the kite schools insurance policies as well as the Port Phillip foreshore planning scheme.

Yep, they were right up on the point with kite at 12 for ages...

Making it hard to shoot the small gap between the last boats and the shallow sand (on a Foilboard). I thought about saying something but at that stage there was not enough wind for wakestyle riding anyway...

Geez it would be nice to hire a digger, trench the area out and remove all the rocks.

The boats also seem to get closer every year.

Not to mention all the beach goers in the last few weeks...who wants to swim in this s*** water anyways??

How about a "beach rock patrol"? A few wheel barrows and if we get enough people together we will have those rocks cleared in one afternoon. My board looks like some mice have been nibbling on the heelside edge

On a semi related note: what's the etiquette to telling an oblivious beginner poley to get out of the kiddie pool?

Last night there was a guy unable to even stand up on his board right in the middle of the "unhooking zone" for lack of a better description.

Firstly. None of use are saying its an "unhooking only zone". As Jeremy said, its about being able to kite without looking at your kite, being able to ride a rotation pattern and know when are where people are going to load up and land tricks..

Seriously.. Just tell them. It's unsafe for ALL for them to be kiting there. They need to go kite over the other side.

No need to be rude, I think most people take it "ok" when you say "hey mate, you don't really belong over this side, its for a bit more experienced people. You really need to be on the other side of that sand spit".

I personally have had the SAME rookie cut my face with her lines as well as crashing into me on the same day!!! Not to mention seeing them endanger multiple other people.. And still didn't listen to multiple people to tell them to not be there. Who's still carrying line cutters anyone? :P

Sick, thanks for that. I almost thought I would cop it for suggesting this so I'm a little flattered

Poorly articulated by me, I didn't mean it was an unhooking only zone, more the area where it is more preferable and more suited to unhooking as opposed to up near the pier.

My concern is being taken the wrong way by the windsurfer. It's easy for someone to take being asked to move as being told to F off even when the reason stared is safety for all. The last thing we need is breeding contempt between kiters and the rest of the community.

Most people may take it as "ok" but it only takes a vocal minority to make a problem for the rest of us.

I believe the council is aware of this situation and the risks it poses to the general public and sailing community and are planning, in conjunction with Parks Victoria and the water police, to trial a permit system effective 01 Jan 2015 where each kite-sailor gets one pre-nominated hour of a pre-nominated time and day of the week, regardless of conditions, if you miss your time you miss out, if there is no wind you miss out. This is to ensure that there are no more than 10 kite-sailors at any one time in the area. Conditions of the permit will mean that you will follow all sailing rules (eg. starboard), and the permit will automatically be revoked if the kite sailor releases their kite at any time and cannot access their control bar.

Permits can be applied for in advance but not on the day (except during the introductory period), and will be easily done via the website for a nominal fee and can be downloaded onto your smartphone or printed out at home or work. You will also need to provide evidence of third party liability insurance and you will need to give the color and brand of your kite to apply for the permit. Anyone going out or coming in after a kite without a permit will be automatically fined. Obviously Euros who cannot speak English and have no fixed address will have their kites confiscated under Victorian anti-hoon legislation. They will also have their vans impounded if they have offensive, immoral or anti-social messages. Furthermore the wearing of boardshorts over a wetsuit will be deemed indecent exposure and fines will be issued.

I understand they are going to bring in the public transport PSO's (who are a bit quiet at the moment) to add some manpower to enforce the permits during the busy summer period. Further more the water police will be notified if any kite-sailors are doing a "runner" and will be swiftly plucked out out the bay. I understand water police have the power to incapacitate a kite by lacerating the air bladders using one of any penetrative arms available and have been well trained in this exercise. With the recent announcement of the retirement of the Chief Commissioner of police who always cautioned moderation, the police have taken a more forceful approach towards anti-social behavior and will no longer tolerate minor misdemeanours.

The St Kilda LSC will also have authority to chase down wayward kite-sailors with their new Jet Skis, but are limited to cutting flying lines only.

This law was passed as part of the by-laws allowed to councils under state legislation. If you have any concerns please contact your local member of parliament. However, if your local member is from the Greens they will have no idea what you are talking about so you might need to buy them a chai skinny soy latte first then they still will have no idea but at least they will let you have a whinge.
