Hi guys, I've been out of the water for years but I've been having withdrawals and am looking at buying some new gear and spending summer by the beach. (Normally Brighton.) Right now I'm working interstate, just wondering if the La Nina weather pattern I've heard mentioned this year is having any negative effects on conditions.

Is the seabreeze kicking in nicely a few days a week or should I just save my pennies for next year.

Any info appreciated.

*edit* Fawkner beacon is saying it's been reasonable for the last three days..

for St. Kilda, the season has been a total sucker so far. aside the fantastic Sunday (with rain and a somewhat muddy bay), there may have been 5 good days so far - there's no sign of what used to be clockwork after work kiteboarding in perfect sunny conditions on clear water.
on top of it, massive rainfall continues to convert the bay into a pretty disgusting wastewater system. So well...

I am not pleased by what I see the weather gods cook up so far.

You need to learn to do the Port Phillip purge after you've had a dunking.
It's way worse when you get manky water in your nasal cavity that then decides to come gushing out about an hour or two later... usually at the dinner table.

Another thing that one of my mates insists on doing is drinking a 1.25 litre bottle of coke after every session. His logic is that if it'll dissolve a steak then it'll kill off what ever he ingested.

hahaha, I do the same thing, although I think good old bundy would be better suited for the disinfection job (esp. at 1.5 liter quantities)
never tried sucking it up the nose though.

good point, still, better swallow than inhale.

i knew i was looking at that 1.25L bottle of coke for a reason. I made the rookie mistake of choosing the ginger beer, delicous but just doesnt have the same disinfectant properties

Well I've got all the gear now, headed down to Brighton when the Fawkner Beacon was registering gusty 10-15 knot westerly winds and I was just in time for the wind to drop like a stone.

Forecast looks terrible until after Tuesday.

Anyone in Melbourne want to roadtrip somewhere with better conditions? I'm on holidays so any day is a good day.

Is it just me or has it been a pretty crummy season so far?

I live across the road from Kite Beach in St K and it has been horrible. But then again, the season really doesn't get consistent until Christmas. Last year, we had a good spell for a week or so in November and then it dropped out until after Xmas.
