I have been windsurfing for quite a few years and nearly all of my kit is due for replacement. That got me thinking it might be time to try kite surfing. Perhaps I might end up buying a kite instead of a bunch of new sails etc. Being able to carry all of my gear on my back really appeals!

So any opinions on which company in the bay I am best to go to for lessons? A dangerous question to ask on a forum?

Hello Kiwi Dave, Yes a dangerous question to pose... we all have are (least?) favourites.

Just make sure they're IKO certified (both the school and the individual).

Good luck.

I usually windsurf at Mordialloc, Mentone, Elwood. I work in the city, so I guess I could go to Saint Kilda from work.

PM me if you are looking for lessons further down the bay, I know an IKO instructor that will look after you

Would the private be much cheaper? Are there anyone around the western suburbs?

OK so I went with one of the outfits at Saint Kilda and now it's time to buy a kite.

At 90 kg in a 12m going to be adequate? The manufacturer's website seems to say a 10m kite starts at 15 knots for a 75kg individual and adding a bit for my extra 15 kg gives me 12. But will this leave me forever waiting for the wind strength to build?

Where should I kite?

Mentone/Mordi is convenient to my home (and I belong to Parkdale sailing club) but the waves are bigger than at Saint Kilda.

The congestion at Saint Kilda is crazy.

Hampton looks good, but if they ever force the kiters all into the kite area then that's going to be worse than Saint Kilda.

Nowhere else in Melbourne will they teach you how to get your Cab stuck in a tree or how to get rescued by a 14 year old boy for the low low price of 25 dollars!

re. buying gear - it's nearing the end of the summer, so I am sure there will be some good deals out there. For a one kite quiver I'd go for a 12m if you are 90kg. Any of the major brands. Shop around. On the other hand unless you plan on learning in gusty northerlies this winter down in Rosebud you may only have a bit over a month to get out and play in the bay and may just want to hold off. Depends how dedicated you are. I know a few guys who bought gear at the end of the season, didn't want to learn in the winter, and then lost interest come the following summer.

Buy a 12 if you want to be sitting on the beach a lot while every body else is out on there on 9 or 10s

That's silly. if they are out on 9's then the wind is too much for a beginner anyway, especially on a 12mt. I agree with you, but it's silly because a 12mt even for a beginner is ideal for when the winds are moderate around 15knots. I've had more ride time on my 12mt kite than with any other kite in anything from 12knots to 22knots. It's no brainer.

Irish. Give Steve at KSS Altona. I was taught by Lars from them way back in 2011 and learnt very quickly from there. Highly recommend Lars.
