Hi Guys
Been board sailing in central and south Gippy for quite a few years and have my spots for each point of the compass. That said a sailbaord can be rigged in a small area and carried through a small gap in scrub to get the spot.
I'm just getting into the kite scene - yep I'm now converting to the dark side - (or was that the otherway around??)
Where are the safe launching spots around the Gippy Lakes and for what wind direction. The N'westerers seem to be always fluky caused by them hills to the north - is the only option to go to Hazelwood?? Does anyone kite there??
Ninety mile beach is obviously a good and safe option for NE/SW - but the noahs are a bit of a worry!!
Look forward to hearing of the ideal spots (without giving it all away!!)

i can imagine some great spot in the gippy lakes it the matter of being able to get to them id love to spend a couple of weeks sailing around and finding ideal spots

Hey Lambie, i grew up around that area, used to sail a catamaran in Hazelwood pondage many moons ago, so yeah i guess it could be a goer in the right conditions, the water is always nice and warm there too! Might just want to check with the local council to see whether there is any restrictions first though.
Im not familiar with the area (never been there) but the southern part of corner inlet, near Yanakie, that could be good in a northerly, looks like its shallow water and protected from swell. Whats this about the sharks though? is it particularily bad on 90 mile beach or are you just worried in general?
Also once the summer seabreezes kick in, Andersons Inlet in Inverloch is fantastic.

Indeed a world speed record was set here by a sailing craft. Keen fishers should drop a line here as well: King George Whiting, Flathead, Trevally and Australian Salmon have all been caught here at times. Boats can also be from the western beach. Climb the sand dunes for some stunning vistas of the region and towards Wilsons Promontory. There are also barbecue and picnic facilities."

Aorta - re the sharks off ninty mile beach - have a few keen fishing friends that have pulled in decent sized sharks - white pointers, hammer heads etc while fishing off the beach...............usually at night, but I have caught little hammer heads only a couple of hundred metres off the beach (and I did wonder where Mummy hammerhead was....)
I'm sure you'd have to be pretty unlucky but it does weigh on your mind when ya muck up a jibe out the back!!

Had a crack at Roseneath this arvo - eastern end of Lake Wellington.
Wind was WNW - ie pretty onshore with a bit of cross on at about 8 to 15knots.
As a (very) nooby was a bit of a challenge with a SS fuel 17m - but got out body dragged and even got up on the board briefly (a few times).
Had to release the safety once when I lost the plot - over the handle bars !!
Now I understand the advantage of the shallow water (not being dragged all over the planet) when trying to pull it all together.
I hear that there is a community (KB) around the Bairnsdale area - sail in easterlies off the Sth side of the Eagle pt silt jetties in summer?? Other KB options - wind directions??

Hey there Lambie - Just my 2 cents worth for you.
I spent a fair bit of time at Loch Sport over the summer and did kite both at the 90 mile beach and on lake Victoria if the wind was a more NE. For a beginner I'd reckon the 90 mile was not a great spot, as the waves will mess with you a bit, but once you get confident you'll probably get a better ride on a wave there than any surfbord is likely to. Didn't see any sharks to mention!
Launching and landing on the lake Victoria side was a bit tricky as there are wooden and rock barriers every so often to stop the beach washing away. I found a spot just down from the supermarket area which was fine, but you'd want to pick your spot. The lake was a little gusty at times, but once you got away from the shore a bit it was no worries at all.

Hey Gav just bought a 21ft sloop and keeping it at paynesville to be able to check some spots out for kiting. I have done a heap of landbased kiting but having a boat makes the place heaps better.Anyway hows the kiting going?
oh yeah Tom next time at loch sport go to the eastern boat ramp and walk out to the sandbar.Heaps better spot for launching also if you head into the national park there is some good spots on a northely and if yu head down infront of the parks house you can kite flatwater on easterly through to sw.

dont bother with hazelwood, to gusty for kiting any direction, even more dangerous than launching at Marley pt.

Actually the kiting is going realy well - have played a further couple of times at Roseneath (W and NW'erlies) and am now reasonably confident with the kite and going in both directions - no where near the confidence I have with the sailbaords but going!!
I hear what you are saying about the boat - we have a spot that we have sailed (boards) to the west of Mclaughlins Beach (down near Yarram). I reckon it could be an awesome kite spot - found it with google earth - go google!!
Jeremy - where are you now based? Bairnsdale Maffra or Sale??
BTW - its all your fault!!!

Gday Lambie I'm based in Paynesville, you can sail in all wind directions here except a true westerly. Here are the kiting locations
Easterly - Off the silt jetties at the old school site
Southerly -Off the foreshore, ONLY for experienced kiters! otherwise out on the silt jetties at Teddies the first eco toilet about 3kms down. park car here and walk to lake, very safe launching here nice and shallow.
N.W to N.E -Off View Street drive in through the eastern end, there is a gap in the fence, drive to the water. Good safe learning area .
Southeasterly- Drive to Newlands estate keep going to the lake side near the launching ramp. Popular spot here over summer .
Definately worth the trip here on an easterly out on the silt jetties, it's a local wind that funnels down from Metung, Kited almost every second nigh over summer here last year.

I notice that an easterly has got up again today - nice and early in the season!
Had a session at Marlay Pt last Sunday also in an easterly - bring on Summer!!
At some stage I will travel down your way so hope to catch up around one of the spots you mention - thanks
