I am going to Mallacoota next week and taking my kiting gear. Anyone kited there? If so, any tips? I am hoping the surf beach will be good (assuming wind) but probably won't venture down as far as Gabo Island without a buddy and/or some support.

Very windy on the bottom lake today, but nowhere good to launch, and its gusty. Hmmn.

Hi Peter, I kited Mallacoota bottom lake last summer. Clearly wind direction plays a big part in where you can launch and kite. I carried my gear from the carpark at the south of the main beach up to near (but not too near) the mouth and there was plenty of room to self launch and land there. This works if the wind is westerly/north westerly but if there's too much south it will be still gusty from the headland.

I think it would be awesome to have a mate or two and hire a boat to get to some of the islands and sandbars in the lake and launch from there, depending on wind direction but especially in southerlies where there must be some awesome spots across the lake.

Good luck and take care. Solo winter kiting can be sketchy. Keep the fishos onside though and they will likely keep an eye out for you.

djdojo, thanks for the tips. Yes, the sandbar near the entrance would be a good place to launch. It was a strong gusty westerly coming right off the land when I was there so I decided to give it a miss, although I was tempted. I think southerlies would be cleaner and more consistent. Next time maybe.
