Hello everybody. I am arriving from Seattle, USA this Saturday morning the 6th and I will be around for 2 weeks on business and then an extra week on my own and I am looking to get in as much riding as possible. I will be staying near St Kilda and I am hoping to ride there. I will also have a car so I can go a little further out of town on the weekends if something is good. Is there any tricks i need to know for St Kilda? If anyone is interested in meeting up to ride or has any advice for my trip, let me know.

Welcome. Hopefully you should get some decent wind in the next few weeks. I think it's just starting to crank and the cold shouldnt bother you coming from Seattle.. St Kilda is busy on weekends, and during the day there's usually about 4 or 5 instructors with students. But it's a great place to surf with a huge beach and a nice flat water bit. Parking is expensive on the beach side of the road but free on the other side at certain times of the day.

Otherwise Altona just across the bridge is great. Check kbv.org.au for some of the other locations.

Great. I appreciate the input. I am hoping to get off work early enough to get out in the evenings during the week.

Everyone around here keeps warning me about Jellyfish. Is there anything I should be concerned about or precautions I should take for Jellyfish or anything in the water? I didn't find much searching the forum but I thought it would be worth asking.

Don't worry there are no jelly fish in Melbourne !!! None that sting badly anyway!!

The worst thing you may run into at St Kilda is a dog turd. !

It's funny, usually I am a bit on the taciturn/terse side when it comes to visitors, but as you're from Seattle I'll let my localist guard down. It was as I windsurfed on Lake Washington a few years ago that some kiters inspired me to give up the pole and take up the strings.

Basically Melbourne is fine as far as critters go. As Harry Potter said, water quality at StKilda (and Altona) can be sketchy, so close your eyes and mouth when you stack and you'll be fine.

Brighton has cleaner water though it's not as flat.

Enjoy your stay, you should get plenty of time on the water.

Lol. Should I have said "St Kilda is a controversial place to surf with a high volume of people, occasionally filthy water, and too many Europeans, most of whom are instructors who are dicks to everyone and use the beach for their own nefarious purposes."

Look, the truth is that it's close to the CBD, it's got a huge beach and flat water and no power lines to chuck your Cabrinha into. If it were an awful place to surf, no one would be there.

I agree. Stkilda has both lefthanders and righthanders to play in. The swell is unbelievable this time of year.Do you ride a surfboard or mutant?

The reason i ask is its pretty frowned upon to ride anything but a strapless surfboard at Stkilda. Its kind of the mecca of wave riding in Australia. Welcome and have a great time.

Chino, seems you need it spelled out; if you use the verb "surf" then it implies that a) there will be waves, and b) you will be riding them.

Thanks again for all the input. I normally ride a twin tip with straps but it sounds like I may have to try out some strapless riding. I am flying out tonight so I will be out on the water on Saturday morning straight from the airport because it will be too early to check in to my hotel.
