I'm not familiar with Carrum, but as a rule of thumb you should technically be steering clear of "No boating zones" or "5 knot zones" which I believe are usually sign posted by yellow boys or signs. I think the "5 knot zones" are an area you can usually get away with though depending on location. Kiting within lifesaving flags is an absolute no, and it is ideal to give them a wide berth, particularly when still learning.

It's good that you're aware you need space, crashing kites around the public and beach goers is only going to end in tears and be detrimental to kiting in Vic. Maybe head out on cooler/overcast days when there is likely to be less beach goers.

Thanks for your replies.....I have found a local kite shop I will check out next week and yesterday read the Rye and surrounding beaches get a lot of north winds during winter which would be perfect for practice!
Look out for me kiting by next summer, I might even throw in a few tricks!
