Hi everyone,
I am a newbie and have been reading this forum as much as posssible. I am not yet confident enough to get out into the boating zone (still trying to get on the board!) but am having some trouble reading maps it seems....I went down to Carrum to check out what was mapped as a kite launch zone. For one it was a sunny day so way too many people around, I asked the guy patroling the area he said there was no such thing! I am very aware I need space at this stage, is it just a matter of waiting until wind conditions are right and the beach is bare? By the way I live near Frankston South.
Cheers

I'm not familiar with Carrum, but as a rule of thumb you should technically be steering clear of "No boating zones" or "5 knot zones" which I believe are usually sign posted by yellow boys or signs. I think the "5 knot zones" are an area you can usually get away with though depending on location. Kiting within lifesaving flags is an absolute no, and it is ideal to give them a wide berth, particularly when still learning.

It's good that you're aware you need space, crashing kites around the public and beach goers is only going to end in tears and be detrimental to kiting in Vic. Maybe head out on cooler/overcast days when there is likely to be less beach goers.

Have a read of the KBV website for some more info.

Hopefully someone can correct me if my advice isn't quite spot on.

Again, not familiar with the exact spot but there are miles of deserted beaches down your way so just wait for a cross-shore or cross-onshore breeze and find some vacant real estate.

As DANE said, there's lots more space on cooler/overcast days.

Good on you for doing your homework so you can do the right thing. I'm sure some of the locals will be able to fill in the specific details.

Thanks for your replies.....I have found a local kite shop I will check out next week and yesterday read the Rye and surrounding beaches get a lot of north winds during winter which would be perfect for practice!
Look out for me kiting by next summer, I might even throw in a few tricks!
Cheers,
