I'll be over in Melbourne in 2 weeks. Where are the best places to kite close to the city? I've only got a 9m, is there enough wind this time of the year?

Depends how heavy you are and what board your using... but if your a light weight then yes a 9m will get you going. Most of our seabreezes are around 15-18 knots... yet today at St.K it was 28-32kn... but that's certainly the exception rather than the rule.

St Kilda & Port Melbourne are accessible by tram from the city.
Brighton is accessible by train from the city.

There are plenty of other spots close but most other are a little trickier to get to without a car.

thank's for that. I'll hav a car, so I'll be OK. what other spots are there around melbourne? I might need to hire a bigger kite, here in WA 9m get's you by most of the time, sometimes I even wish I had a 7m. I'm 84kg, so not really on the light side.

Hi Bestkiter... when are you going to be in Melbourne? I'm coming over from Scotland and will be staying in St Kilda for my first few days there 1st - 5th December, I'm on holiday so will be able to kite almost any time (except from some serious sight seeing!!)... could always try and meet up with you for a wee session if you fancy it? (also assuming I actually get my kit over with me via the airline!!)

You mentioned hiring gear... I didn't think you could actually hire gear... am I wrong? (no point in dragging a pile of stuff to the other side of the world if I don't really need to!!!)

Anyway, let me know if your about at the same time as me and are free for a session!!!

Not sure if there's any hire facilities around but you'd be best off talking to SHQ (Sandringham), RPS (Elwood), Kite Republic (St.K / Port Melb) & Kitepower (Geelong) and seeing what they've got.

Your a couple of kg heavier than i am (78kg) and i spend most of my time on a 12m with a 136x41.5 board so i guess you could use that as a benchmark and go from there.
