I had to look twice as I was driving past Brighton Beach tonight butIi believe they have installed a new 5kn pole 40m north past the reef that's in front of the SLSC. Surely not. Can anyone confirm? Must have gone up today as I kited on Sun and did not see yesterday either.

According to Parks Vic, there is a swimming only zone going in, and a shared windsports zone. Essentially, if youre kiting within 200m of shore, you can only kite within the shared winsports zone.
Kite in the swimming zone, you're gone.
Kite above 5 knots within 200m of shore (outside of the shared windsports zone), you're gone.
People are sick of copping kites on thier heads.
The more popular kiting got, the more likely rules would be set.

The 5 knot rule has always been there it is not new. The only new thing is some of the no boating zones and these where decided about 3 or 4 years back and have taken this long to be installed. They are not related to any recent incidents.

Any boatie in Melbourne knows the "5 knot/200m from shore" has existed for years. It has simply never been policed properly against kite surfers.

Smithy, you say "The only new thing is some of the no boating zones...". This is incorrect, as there are new 'swimming only' zones being rolled out.

According to Parks Vic theses new zones are as follows: 'Swimming only - all vessels including personal watercraft, powered and non-power vessels are not permitted in this zone.'

And they are a result of safety issues/incidents... from Parks Vic again: "Swimming zones are prepared under the Marine Safety Act 2010 with the primary aim of providing a safe environment for water users. They apply conditions of operation and prohibit incompatible uses for safety reasons."...

Kiters are exempt from the 5knott/200m rule when inside a Shared Wind Sport zone. Exception is if they are within 50m of another vessel or swimmer.

"Shared Wind Sport Area - this zone provides an area for kite boarding, sail boarding and other wind based boating which may exceed 5 knots except within 50m proximity to other vessels and swimmers. Other vessels are permitted in this area."

Taken direct from Parks Victoria Website.

Are you talking about the navigation pile that's been in there for ages? It's a black triangle pile indicating the reef there.

Ah the new no boating zones are the swimming only zones, and, the fact that the swimming zones are prepared under the Marine Safety act 2010 demonstrates that this is not related to any recent events. So correct on both counts

No the f***s have put in new pole inside of reef city side They have no idear?? i have never seen swimmers over the reef They are fricken clueless The Councill water sport sign of 2 to 3 years shows up to the reef/ toilet block???And do they realize that this pole is dangerous to kiters/ specially to lerner s and reduces the kiting area on the beach on S/E WIND NOTE ALSO THE POLE IS NOT SHOWN ON PARKS PLAN ??? What a joke

They have put in two new poles that I can see. The one to the north is a simple reef marker and I suspect it is simply replacing the existing pole that looks a bit wonky.

The other is a yellow pole with black marks (stripes?) on it straight out from the beach. I suspect it is marking the 200m boundary.

It's really dumb putting a pole right in the middle of the kiting zone. If you hit it or get your lines hooked up in it then you are at huge risk of serious injury.

If they're going to mark these areas then a nice rounded buoy would be more appropriate. If they have to put in a sign then it needs to be made of bendy plastic.

I have to say that Parks Victoria and KBV have done an appallingly bad job on the new kiting zones. They are creating a dangerous situation for kiters by crowding people into inappropriate areas and putting dangerous signs in place. They pretended to have a consultation process but there have been no changes from the original draft zones. I put in a submission pointing out the dangers of the proposed zones and was duly ignored.

I have seen swimmers over the reefs. There are some keen swimmers of Brighton that go a long way offshore to poles and back, and follow the shore line quite a distance out.

If you kite there keep a very close eye out for any swimmers. The rules are you must slow down to 5 knots within 50m of any swimmer.

Yes in front of Dendy beach But this is about the new pole and they do not swim over reef in windy conditions Swimmers long way off shore should be fined if in boating area They should come to the party there are 200 kiters who use this area and handful of swimmers
