HI Guys

I'm moving down to Melbourne next week from the Gold Coast. I have been looking at the KBV website (great site by the way, very informative) which has answered most of my questions for kiting in the area.

My only question remains, coming from QLD even in the winter i get by with just a thermal rashie and boardies. What wet suit will I need. I have an old 3/2mm with me but I also have a 5/4mm wetsuit back in the UK which I can get sent out to me. which will I need with winter comming?

Also if any one wants a kite buddy, I'll be living in Essendon and email me through seabreeze. I have been kiting for about 4 years now although i'm no pro I can hold my own.

Personally I would be opting for the 5/4mm. ( 3/2 ( should be fine for surfing ) could be ok but I would also want a wetsuit top over it to stop the wind chill when kiting )
Water temps through winter in Vic range from about 12 - 16deg add a cold southerly wind chill..... and your ball$ begin retreating. Very often when kiting you will stop and suddenly realise it is actually warmer in the water than out. sobering thought..... particularly for a Queenslander.....

That being said winter is may favourite time for kiting...... empty beaches, nuking winds and big surf.

i use a 3/2 through the winter. it keeps you warm but your feet and hands get completely numb. the water is around 8-10 degrees from june-july-august. outside when it is windy it is about 5 degrees with wind chill sometimes colder. best places are saint kilda for the cold fronts which are usualy 30-40 knot westerlies and we also get alot of northerlies which are great for rosebud/rye which is a flat water shallow spot for kilometres on end. the northerlies are usually 20-40 knots but very consistent.

hope it helps

Ewan your crazy in just a 3/2 in the middle of winter!

I'm a skinny bugger with no padding or insulation so i wear a 4/3 for any days other than the middle of summer. When it gets cold i start wearing booties as well.
I'd much rather be warm then freezing my nuts off.

Haha, nice try Ewan. Are you trying to make people freeze so you get the beach to yourself or what??? Every time you kite through winter you turn blue, complain you can't feel your hands or feet and come out of the water close to hypothermic...

Definitely a minimum 3/4 full steamer I'd suggest mate, most of us here in Vic will wear a 1mm Thermal or something of the sort to stop the wind chill as well. I'd be having that 4/5 shipped out pronto if you're planning on being out there in winter.

if you're looking for kiting buddies send your info through to me mailto:[email protected] and would reccommend joining our facebook group KITE REPUBLIC as we'll be doing plenty of social kiting days when the winds are looking good.

Catch you soon mate, dress warm!!!

NOt many places with surf in a Northerly ( great clean waves but offshore winds dont help with the kiting )
TRy heading to Phillip Island ( CAt Bay, Flyns Reef, Right Point ) if you are after waves in a northerly.

IN a southerly front you can almost take your pick.......Flinders back beach ( NIce reef breaks ) , Rye back beack right through to Portsea although these are beachies and can get 10ft + and closing out where it is almost impossible to get out the back....not for the feint hearted. Or head down the west coast....torquay, anglesea, fairhaven ( amongst others ) all have decent surf and it is not as risky as the open beaches on the east coast ...but you really need Southerly , SSW or SE for these beaches too much west in the wind and it gets gusty......

Flat water in a NOrtherly.......head to Rosebud !

Hi,
I hate the cold so I bought a 5mm diving wet suit made by paragon it's new tech which is very flexible it has a merino wool lining around the back and chest are very warm indeed something to look into if you cannot stand the cold.

Cheers.

Jim.
