Hi there.

I'm moving to Aus and have been asked where I would like to be based. I kite and love the beach so was wondering if you all had any recommendations for places to rent apartments. Sydney is the first option but I've been to Melbourne and prefer it. St Kilda? Where would you live if you could choose pretty much.

It's just me, but I'd be looking for an apartment, to share only with one other.

I'll be frequenting the airport also.

Thanks in advance for your advice!

Regards
Isaac

Altona is my favorite spot within 30 mins of the CBD. Apparently it's a bit of a dodge spot to live but I'm new to Melbourne too and that's just what I've heard. It's also close to the airport but not so close to the CBD compared to St Kilda.

St Kilda is unfortunately too busy most of the time to be able to get a decent session in.

St Kilda has public transportation. It is near the city, has lots of places to have fun bar hopping, restaurants, shopping, festivals. It is busy on the weekends, and after work. I don't kite there. Because the bay is round you can kite on any wind direction. You will need a car. The best place for me is Rosebud area during the winter but is far from everything and Altona during the summer. Cheers

If you could honestly live anywhere and strictly down here for kiting only, proximity-wise living down Frankston/Mentone way would be best. You could kite the summer seabreezes and then drive south to Rosebud for winter. It really depends on how often you expect to get out. If you are getting out 4-5 times a week it would make sense. IF you were getting out once a week then it wouldn't really matter where you live as you'd probably be maximum an hour away from any given beach as long as you stayed close to the CBD/coast.

If you could depart from Avalon, living in Geelong would give you access to both northerlies and southerlies from Pt Henry and Ocean Grove.

If you are looking for fun Melbourne living and being close to Tulla, Yarraville/Williamstown gives you access to the tolls to the airport, Altona, 15 minutes to the CBD, and a 60-90 minute drive to either Pt Henry or Rosebud. Alternatively you could live in St Kilda/Port Melbourne and walk to the beach in the summer and be screwed in the winter.

You need a car no matter what way you look at it.

Thanks! Need a car eh.

Oh man. I've seen St Kildas, it's hectic. I'll look into Altona!

Cheers

Have you considered Perth?

If wind is the priority then Perth is the go.

Hampton or Brighton are best for kitesurfing on the eastern side of the bay and are both approx 15kms from the city.

I've never kited at Altona but I hear its pretty good.

Brighton north or Elwood are good alternatives: 5k from Middle brighton kite spot, 6 KM from St kilda kite spot. Train direct to city. A bit quiet compared to St kilda, which some will considered as a + others as a -
South Melbourne is an other one, sevral alternative spots to kite in between St kilda and Spirit of Tasmania

If you hate crowds and wogs pumping their greasy cars down the road (yes I am allowed to say that thanks to George Brandis), then stay away from the East side of the bay. Altona is your kite surfing mecca. Relatively uncrowded, flat water (mostly) and much more room than StKilda. My only recommendation is to live south of the railway line. Any closer to the refinery and chemical plant up north a bit and you'll regret it.

Are you guys married!? St.kilda/middle park/port Melbourne/Elwood are the only places to live otherwise you will have no social life.
More to do in Melbourne than kite, don't live somewhere too far from CBD/Interesting suburbs. I guess it depends how old you are or if you still go out....

St Kilda and Chapel St are way over rated IMO

as opposed to what..? St Kilda has so many bars/pubs/clubs/restaurants, so much to do, right on the beach, and unless you are kiting on a sunday afternoon at st kilda its definitely not too busy to have a good session. Then in the winter northerlies you have dog beach close by and brighton, and rosebud is an hour drive away. If you are looking for an apartment its probably going to be a bit more pricey than say altona or further down the east side, but its pricey for a reason. so much public transport, and close to city and beach. Ive lived in st kilda all my kiting life I wouldnt say I was ever 'screwed' in winter.

I suppose if you only want ease of access to kiting and thats it, its probably not the total best place. But I can say living in St Kilda I almost never missed a good day of wind, not to mention that the true seabreeze is always about 3-4 knots more than hampton and 2-3 more than Altona.
