Good northerly and not too gusty at Brighton on Saturday.

More kitecam shots and GPS log here: www.peterskiteboarding.com/2011/09/jumping-in-strong-northerly-at-brighton.html

It was almost crowded and the water is getting warmer. No major dramas this time which was good to see. But some small kids were wandering through tight kite lines. This should be avoided.

You note on your blog that people were putting up 12's - and you advised them not too as it was too strong.

I would argue putting up a 10 in winds that were gusting to 30knots (and packed a powerful punch) was probably going a bit too far.

Yep, I initially pumped up a 10 but chickened out once the sand started blowing off the beach. Opted for the 8m, and didn't regret it - especially once there was a touch of westerly in it which ironed out the gusts.

Matto,

Stuart and I kited upwind to near the breakwater to get away from the congested area. There was some flatter water close in and less wind. Going upwind and out some distance fully depowered on the 10 was fine for me - but I weigh 86kg.

Stuart, who weighs less, was on his 7 and had plenty of power.

When I came in the wind was definitely stronger, I would most likely have taken out my 7 at that point, hence my recommendation to the guy with the 12 that he not use it, as my 10 was maxed out.

He was an experienced kiter but did get blown off his edge. He came in after a few runs and got his 7.

Incidentally, we were wondering why so many people were kiting on the narrow tack out from the beach, particularly as some were getting big boosts.

Peter,

No worries.

I understand we all have to make decisions on the size of kite - obviously it was quite gusty - and the DIRTY northerly at Brighton is never that fun. But looking at both your wind chart on your site (spike to 30kts, gusts 35kts), even during the session - 25kts with gusts to 30 is fairly strong for a 10m.

Glad you had a good day - (good stuff on the jump transitions as well)

Wonder no more. That's what 95% of folk do.

Brighton in a WSW is worse. Just about every clown out there tacks the length of the beach

The accident appears to have happened today (Tue 20/9). Yesterday there were gusts up to 45 knots. Today there were gusts up to 30 knots - which may be what lofted the guy. He may have had a kite up that was too big.

It needs to be pretty much a dead Westerly if you want do parallel runs to the beach, anything more or less sees you running on an oblique track.

Anyway, I don't quite understand what all the fuss is -- people riding the length of the beach is not on; or causes too much congestion? Perhaps a visit to St Kilda on a WSW will put things back in perspective.
