As summer approaches... for a kite, where are the best places to go?

I'm used to Green Point as a windsurfer, but now I can only think of Brighton and maybe down Bonbeach way?

Hey KDog,

Summer usually means southerlies. Which means Brighton, St. Kilda, and the like work.

G'day K Dog, while it may be a bit of a drive Point Henry at Geelong is great in any Northerly wind direction.

If you do head down this way, I suggest that you wear booties. Some of the sea life around the Point Henry area are unfriendly to bare-footed kiters.

Thanks guys. We do get a lot of hot northerlies in Summer too though… although I do agree we see them blow hard in winter, Summer still has its share…. And was mainly thinking about this weekend…. Point Henry could be worth the trip – cheers!

It's a bit further but Rosie is also great in a Northerly, very wide and has nice clean water plus lots of little waves over the back to boost from. You probably don't need booties there but it does get crazy busy. I'm thinking there may be some decent wind early Saturday *fingers crossed*

^^^ fingers and toes crossed. tons of space at Rosebud just walk up the beach to get past to usual show-ponies at the front.

Beware of Northerlies at Brighton. Unless there's a decent westerly component they'll be gusty and will take you offshore if you stuff up.

What often happens is that experienced kiters will be out and making conditions look better than they are, so beginners rig up then soon find themselves unable to stay upwind and perhaps even unable to relaunch if they drift into the wind shadow at the bottom of the beach.

For all beginners, please realise that true northerlies at Brighton are pretty lousy fun, even for skilled kiters, as well as risky in terms of getting back to shore in the event of an accident. NW on the other hand can be pretty epic.

Cool. I was down Rosie a few weeks back SUPing and noticed how awesome the conditions are with a few dudes out on 12+ kites…. Wondering if the heated land might suck in a seabreeze and counter the Northerly and push it up too high…. :/ Yes heard that about Brighton…. Cheers.

I have been to rosebud plenty of times when the south channel shows north 20knots but no wind a rosebud. Makes sense now. Where is a better option to kite when that happens?

I disagree. Point Henry is finniky and usually about 20kn less than anywhere else. Never had anything but a foot full of glass from that s-hole.

Good call. Nice little reef to massage your kite too if you do put it down in the water and can't relaunch.

Its one of those places..... the usual math is that the land is too hot in summer / spring and it sucks in the seabreeze from over the beach - makes a little micro breeze that counters out the north.... then tumbles around and pushes the hot air straight up..... BUT... there are odd days when you write-off Rye and Rosebud and it just comes through for some god known reason..... and only the locals are out enjoying it.....

Surely there are better Northerlies for kiting though in summer / spring...... the Northerlies do happen, and make those dreadfully hot summer days with the desert wind blowing in over the bay......

Windsurfing I'd go to Green Point.... so maybe Hampton if there is some west in it could be doable? The further you go south the more iffie it gets...... Carrum could be good, but has to be blowing pretty hard....

Wonder if any inland lakes could be alright?

The Glass at Point Henry is crazy + the naked men in the bushes is a little off putting also
It only really works on one wind direction also witch makes it limiting
Port Arlington / Point Richards is the go its always windy there also being on a point

The warmer the water and the land on Morn Pen the stronger the northerly....

Its the issue with the wind strength vs rising winds vs land mass water temp the hotter both the stronger the northern wind vs sea breeze counter acting it. Its always stronger at the ocean than the bay. Hence Alnino might mean a summer of strength in north winds.

But sea breeze on ocean side is also awsome...?

maybe then does this seabreeze effect kill off the northerly earlier in the day at rosie than say at Brighton?

Loads of glass
Loads of weed
Loads of dog sh1t
Loads of razor sharp shells
Loads of urchins
Loads of naked men in bushes
Loads of weird local crew who look at you oddly!

The East side of the bay is far safer for you metro types

Yep, in the beautiful clear blue waters and white sandy beaches of Morn Pen from 8am to 2pm.

But get it where u can was a motto of the teen years & still lives true....rough around the edges was usually the best option for success but had its downsides.....
