I've never kited there but have surfed Torquay am keen to try it. What direction does it need?

I've kited there... it's terrible (okay, it's great). On a westerly, you may struggle to get the kite in the air given said, point blocking the wind, so get as far as you can away from it and watch out for the surf schools etc. that use that beach.
