G'day all,
Im a Rye boy and im looking at getting a bigger kite.
What size do you guys normaly use for Rye winds im guessing 10 - 20 knots of wind.
and hoping some of you guys know a better average of wind here.
Ive roughly been told a 13m kite im normaly 65 -70 kgs on a Mojo 65 board i guess about 130 cms board or 65'??
not a complete beginner but not a pro lol.
whats your thoughts
cheers cam

Also wheres the closest shop down here?? Used to be one in Rye but that shut years ago.
I think theres one in sandringham?? any closer? I work in Seaford so it shouldnt be too bad to check out some after work if they are open still

You need to tell us what size kite you normally use. Generally lighter wind riding is more about the board than the kite.

Ahh yep my bad sorry
Um have a 2001 Peter Lynn arc840 lol
Ive got a almost 6 foot modified surfboard for lighter wind and the other thin kite board for good wind.
Ive been told on the forum that the old Arc is a piece of crap. but thats all i could get back then in the budget. taught myself on it.

but been told to go newer and bigger as it will be near inpossible to body drag upwind with the arc.
because ive been using a ankle leashe ive never had to body drag up wind
silly me haha. touch wood no carnage.

ill still try body draggin up wind with the arc but i want a bigger kite for lighter winds
and one to use in most conditions. plus get up a bit with the ages haha

You really want to start from scratch. Arcs have both good and bad features but if you're still having trouble with the Arc then you still have a fair bit of learning to do. Arcs will body drag upwind just fine.

Just getting a bigger kite will not help you at all, especially as you are fairly light at 60-75kg.

If you want an all round kite then a 10-11m bow kite will do you nicely. Combine it with a largish twintip and you can ride in any conditions that have a good coverage of whitecaps. Make sure you get a freeride tt (flatter rocker) and not a freestyle board (more rocker, needs more power)

You could go as big as 12m for more bottom end.

Surfboards are not good for light wind (unless they are specifically designed for it). They generally have too much rocker and they're too slow to be good in lighter winds. It's also an acquired skill to drive them properly.

Pop in to SHQ in Sandringham, RPS in Elwood, or the The Zu or Kite Republic in St Kilda and they will sort you out. Maybe have a demo ride or get a lesson while you're at it.

Im pretty well sorted well i think so lol
body drag where i want to etc just have never tried body draging up wind to recover my board. because ive been using a leashe and havnt lost the board yet.
i only get out once or twice a year but i really want to go out more.

the reason for looking for another kite was due to being told that id be lucky if i could body drag up wind with it and the de power is crap.
But ive never had any troubles with the kite.
just never tried the upwind drag lol
so when i can get out next im going to try it and ditch the leash so i dont get sconed with the board.

the surf board ive got is what i bought when i got my kite 10 years ago hahaha
been modified fairly flat on the bottom with sharpend rails and two extra fins added.
just how it was when i got it. oh and has straps.

Id like a bigger kite so i can go out in less windier conditions.
I generaly use the surf board if im struggling with the wind (not enough) bit more surface area to keep me humbing along. but as soon as the wind has picked up i grab the other board. heaps better to ride and i can edge heaps hard to go upwind quicker with better steerablility.
so you rekon 10 -11? thoughts on the 13m??
thanks for the reply so far
cheers cam

I bought a 13M octane as my only kite, looking back now i wish i bought a smaller kite around 10-11M. I way 85Kg and the 13M is a death trap in anything over 18kn.
Ive been out in winds scratching 10 knts with my 13M and seen people out there on 10M kites having just as much fun.

Cheers for the discussion fellas. I've just come back from WA (took it up over there) for Christmas and hoping to get out somewhere near Rye when the wind picks up. From memory West Rosebud is the most secluded spot for noobs like me. I'm on a 10m Switchblade and weigh about 87kg FWIW. Usually does the trick in anything above 15 knots.

Rye cops Northerlies, and its quite common to get strong 25-30+ knots winds during winter. An 8 +10m would see you through most of the good days down there, without having to sit out sessions cos your maxed out on an 11m.
