we dont need anymore beginers

Man up and say something to the person when they are on the water seabreeze wont help.

Its kiting there are only two faided makers out in the water, not signs, could be tourist, local or euro. How about we send the time on getting a race series together than talk trash on seabreeze

I drove down to Rosebud, spent half the day riding by myself between two sandbars on perfect flat water with heaps of breeze, fully powered on my 8, a few kites out but plenty of room if you went up wind a little. I rode until my arms fell off.
Why would you go to St Kilda and then complain about it being crowded?????? WTF..... What did you think it would be like?
Port Phillip bay is very big and there are lots of spots for everyone

I don't think anyone is complaining about it being crowded. It wasn't crowded (winter is hardly ever crowded). Once I got upwind of everyone I had acres of water to myself. There were probably only 25 kites out. The complaint was about people behaving like douches, riding through the crowds of beginners to do their unhooked tricks 5m from shore (in the beginners area) and making it nearly impossible to get out by riding back and forth close to shore with a direct onshore right at the top of the sandbank which was the only possible launch spot.

Rosebud is great, but when you only have 3 hours to get out for a kite including the commute, St Kilda maximises the time on the water. I'd take Rosebud over StK any day of the week if I had a choice.

I'm sorry, but this is where I disagree. If it was a beginner, sure, say something (and most people do) as can be seen by the last time I was at St Kilda when we caught a spray from an instructor who was teaching a mate in the kiddies pond. If its an experienced rider, they know better and you shouldn't have to tell them not to ride through a bunch of beginners doing unhooked tricks. They know its not right, they just don't give a ****.

The other issue with experienced riders is its actually hard to say something because you or them may be out on the water so catching them back at shore is a matter of timing and there is a good chance you'll be on the water when they're on shore or visa versa. With a beginner its pretty easy because they're almost always on shore or near shore so you can stop next to them to have a word.

my solution would be just to start walking out with your kite....make them get out of your way.

"Hard to talk to them"

Kite over to them
and say word up..

and next time you see a beginner in the pond i want to see a post about that too!!

On a better not anyone apposed to pulling that stupid black boy with the pipe that sits just above the waterline out next weekend? just south of the kiddies pool, one day someone or their kite will land on it.

might take my boat out and pull it up next weekend. and drop a new down south so we could have a little course to race around...

There we go. Wasn't even a month ago I posted about exactly that.(25/4)

And I even got a mate to go over and chat to him because I had a camera on me at the time. There was even a whole discussion around zoning and where the beginners are supposed to be. Happy?

I don't know if I'm classed as a beginner, but I'm unable yet to go upwind. This leaves me no choice but to try and launch as far out as possible on the sandbar near the kiddy pond and head north-east trying not to get too close to the beach. With the onshore conditions, it was almost impossible to go far before ending up on the beach! Inevitably, I had a bit of a crash in the shallows and eventually gave up and went home.

But in the meantime, a couple of times I had to lower my kite while these boys came past. OK I thought, interesting choice of place to ride for 'experienced' kiters. No matter though, I just walked out when I needed to and let them slalom round me. What was quite amusing was when another 'beginner' tangled with my lines. Given the wind strength, I pulled my safety, leaving my kite attached by one line. We got untangled, then I waited for him to come back to help untangle the mess (which he did). Mr RPM or Slingshot or whatever went past and tried to jump over my lines and caught it with his board. 5 metres later he came to a sudden stop. I was annoyed but I think he got a bigger fright than I did. In the end he detangled too and my lines were OK. No harm done.

I wouldn't have gone out there if it hadn't been for Kite Republic inviting me up for a 'Ride Day', but I think if you're experienced I would rather be somewhere else than St K.

Its probably worth changing your kite brand in future. If you get a cabrinha, everyone will hate you instead of only a small group of people

On a serious note, it probably wasn't you that we are referring to then. There was a couple of RPM's out that I saw.

When I learnt it was 50/50 beginners, nowadays it seems to be 80-90% beginners
Think this is what he means..

Might be a bit of old hat but as a reminder have a look at this "historic" document:

http://www.kbv.org.au/kbvdocs/2009/091212%20KBV%20facilitates%20West%20Beach%20meeting%20of%20schools%20&%20kiters.pdf

:)

Thanks for posted that. It's not old hat at all but a relatively recent resolution of some of the issues addressed in this thread. Everyone should at least look at the diagram at the end of the document which among other things outlines the access corridoor for experiences kiters (also in saffer's map above). The more people that are made aware of this the better. Including reminding people on the beach who aren't in the right spot.

Probably also because there are a lot more beginners in the kiddies pond learning to get up on the board.

Cooks another batch of popcorn. Anyone?!

Seriously, that document was well written and very informative. Thank you for posting. Question: what if the wind is from the NW? Wouldn't the students end up crowding into the general launch area? Obviously, instructors are well able to control this? Just curious

No one kites at St Kilda in a NW anyway. Its too gusty. I know it looks cross shore on the charts, but because it comes from Port Melbourne over buildings and what not, its just not worth kiting there. W is about as far around that way that you want to kite. Anything with a N in front of it I'd be moving towards Brighton or to the other end of the bay (Rosebud)
