We were notified of an incident where "a rider at St Kilda crashed his kite and ended up with one of his lines caught on the mast of a cadet dingy. This was in the kiddie pool area near to/behind the slipway". The cadets are usually crewed by young children.

The area is a no-go zone for kiters and the Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron has already complained about kiters being too close to cadet sailers.

There was some indication as to the kiter concerned but in agreement with recent "censure" that we didnt bother to get both sides before going public we are now seeking input: If anyone was a witness to this incident or can shed some light on it then please contact KBV here or privately via [email protected]

If the report is true we will follow it up; it is this sort of behaviour which will get kiters banned in the yacht basin at St Kilda and maybe around West Beach too.

This brings up an interesting point...

Is there anything that the KBV can do to prevent this happening? I've seen a lot of riders flout the slipway and pylon rules. i.e. by riding around the pylon in the water or right up close to the slipway. If you chat to them about it, you get an apology but they are generally back there doing the same thing again the moment they think no one is watching.

I don't see how the KBV can take any action but I think one of the only ways to resolve this may be to get the council to fine those involved so they learn the hard way.

The times when Cadets and Kiters use the kiddy pool area at the same time is rare. the experienced Kiters who use this area usually do so when the wind is in the 20-30kn range. This is too much wind for the cadets. Additionally, this is also usually in the afternoon - also a time when the cadets are not using this area. Can we put to the RMYS that they assist in restricting mooring of yachts in the area to the east of the yacht pens as these boats cause a kiting hazard.
The areas in Victoria for strong winds and restricted chop are few which means that this area to the north of the pier will always be attractive to kiters.
