Hi everyone. I have about two weeks off at chrissy and was going to go for a drive to some kitesurfing spots, hopefully staying at a backpackers at night so i can unwind with a beer and hang with people.

Does any one know any places that have:

1. good beaches for kiteing/popular spots so i can get assistance launching etc.
2. Near a backpackers

I look forward to planning my trip!

sandy point is amazing, very shallow inlet with great wind. Pt Roadknight near anglesea is good aswell, on low tide you can get some good swell raping around the point

You could also head down to Inverloch and sandy point is not far away too, there is a caravan park right on the foreshore where the launch site is, its quite busy this time of year though.

If you want adventure and kiting in Victoria you have to be prepared to either kite on your own or take a mate with you.

There seems to be a strange mentality amongst Victorian kiters particularly once they leave the confines of the Bay.

In my experience, you can drive from Queenscliff to Lorne and not see one kite BUT.........
If you stop and set up your kite ( even start kiting ) withing 30min there will be at least 2 -3 others another hour and ther will be 2-3 more. I have had the same experiences on the east coast, phillip island and so on...... every time.

Obviously plenty of people are keen to kite but are either unsure about kiting on their own or are not confident about the conditions which is fair enough i guess. Seeing other kiters out seems to give them the confidence that it is kiteable etc.... sheep style

The Backpackers part is the main problem in that there are not that many Torquay has a really good one ( with plenty of baldies on the sniff ) if you are going west coast. phillip island has one as well ( i think ) not sure about Rye & Rosebud

If you are really wanting launch and land assistance etc.... then you will get the most kiting done in the bay heading elsewhere (ie : away from the bay ) with the expectation that there are / will be kiters there could result in a lot of driving until you spot someone kiteing and even then they will be on the water not necassarily able to launch and land you.

My recommendation is to kite at ST Kilda for a few days first introduce yourself to a few people and see if anyone is keen for an overnighter etc.... and away you go.

or try these guys : MAKO ( Melbourne Average Kiters Organisation ) really good bunch of people ( 97 members on Facebook ) and are always organising trips to ...sandy point, inverloch, apollo bay etc etc etc.....sometimes just day trips other times overnight camping.

im thinking of doing an overnighter to inverlock, sandy point way in the next week or too.
What wind should i be looking for that makes good kiting down that way?

my parents just got a house down at inverlock, once they get settled im sure if u have a tent and im down there they will be more then welcoming to have people stay on the lawn or something.

I know im going to have some great sailing down there, you should never kite alone so why not have some company

Southerly is probably best but SW and SE also work quite well .......you can check the forecasts for the area here ( via clickable map )
http://www.bom.gov.au/weather/vic/vic-forecast-map.shtml

or the current conditions here :
www.bom.gov.au/weather/vic/vic-observations-map.shtml

( note : wonthaggi and pound creek observation posts are not directly in line with the wind off water (slightly sheltered on some directions ) and can quite often be reading lower than the actual winds, use a combination of those two stations plus wilsons prom to establish in your own mind what the approx winds should be. )

It can be a bit hit and miss as the forecasting seems woeful this year, if the forecast says 20+knots I would say you should head down, but at 15 - 20 it may not be work risking the drive.

Thanks Harry, was down there today in what seemed to be an easterly.
Was a great day on the flat water, just a shame the tide went so far out.
