I'm just starting to venture into the surf .. Are there any actual rules or no go beaches...??

I came upon this general thing from Maui KiteBoarding - which was good for right of ways for all aspects of Kiting..

http://www.mauikiteboardingassociation.com/kiteboarding_right-of-way_rules.html

*Am just thinking it will be 2 seconds before clubbies are all over you while launching a kite - and i'd like to know if it is ok - or not..

cheers

Technically yes, but it also requires common sense. The main rule that I would avoid breaking at all costs relates to kiting in swimming areas. I.e. Between the flags.

There a basic rules which talk about speed when riding within a 100m or 200m of shore, but in most cases, if you exercise common sense and don't kite close to swimmers, surfers or other water users (outside the flags), no one is likely to complain. The majority of issues are normally when people are jumping over swimmers or not riding in a safe manner near other water users.

If you like words this is good:

But I like simple pictures (IKO right of rules, but I can't quickly find it so found it on another (lesser) forum):

There are certain beaches where the life rescue request people do not kitesurf due to it being so busy (Manly, NSW was one) but I don't know any here.

I like the pictures - right hand, right of way is good too.. Much easier to remember than the clock face right of way thing..

Yeah, although I can see myself getting in a muddle if I ever learn to ride blind! ... or toeside...

I think the one of biggest relevance is give way to the rider on the wave. Whist this makes sense from every point of view, I think my default would be to assume if I'm travelling with my right hand going forward, then I'd have right of way. I appreciate this isn't the right default assumption, and is actually quite dangerous... but like a typical bay riding city boy i don't know much about waves.
