Most people will go to Altona.

Ricketts can be good but you need to be very, very careful.

The beach will be packed with families on a hot day. You cannot launch there until about 6:00 pm.

It's a no boating zone and patrolled by life savers.

There's no parking anywhere close on hot days.

Some of the launch area is littered with sharp shells all along the water line.

On the inside there's a mega urchin infested reef downwind. That's good if you stuff up. On the outside there's no reef but the next stop downwind is Altona.

If it's strong it will be crowded with windsurfers doing the missile of death thing they do. They hurtle at full speed through the pack then crash on the inside. It's kind of cute. They all bob around in the shallows in a bunch. They look like penguins getting ready to leap onto an iceberg.

Ricketts is an advanced spot only. I've been riding for over 2 years, and I'll happily make the trip around the bay and do battle with the sea urchins at Altona any day over running the risk of ending up on some gnarly reefs downwind at Ricketts. Kiteboarding is inherently dangerous enough (without proper precaution) before you add reefs and being blown out into the bay as your plan B if things go pare shaped.

yeah but apart from the poleys doing there penguin dance and the reefs and the dodgy launch land and it can be good in an EsE and save a decnt drive to a guaranteed crowded Altona if you live in SE suburbs
