Hi seabreeze,

that's my first post after reading the forum for a year. My name's Eric and I started kiting about a year ago and I am pretty stoked! After sailing for ages and giving up on motocross after a couple of near-death experiences I have finally found the sport that combines elements of both.
I am one of the robocops on the beach with impact vest, hook knife and helmet for a couple of reasons: I have family, I spent quite some time and money getting my brain to the point where it actually earns money and being considered cool is not one of my goals in life. Even worse, I don't wear boardies over the wetsuit.

After a great summer kiting in St.Kilda, Altona and Rye/Rosebud in 15-30kts I am all geared up for the winter. The only issue I have is that I don't really know anyone to go kite with bc I usually go to the spot, kite three hours straight and go home. That is (apart from the kiting part) rather boring and in winter a real safety issue in case something goes wrong and the only witnesses are dog owners looking the other way.

The bottom line is: Who is going to be around during the winter and would like to team up?

Nice first kitedating post Eric.

A couple questions:

Do you like watching Foreign films and taking long walks on the beach?
Just how weird are you?
Do you own a Speer and Jackson No.3?

Yes, winter can get a little lonely which has safety ramifications.
Be happy to swap phone numbers to car pool for Rosebud trips etc (lots of Northerlies in winter).

PM me
Cheers

Ditto - will be around all winter - if it's kiteable I'll probably be there! Always happy to make more kiting buddies! Shoot me a PM and be happy to swap numbers too!

8m RPM and 90kg. Should be ok for ~35 kts which is my current limit anyway.

Hey WeirdEd

Which bit of Melbourne are you in? There's always people at Brighton/Hampton/St Kilda most weekends if it's windy and the fronts are not *too* scary. Sometimes even when they are.

When it's Northerly there is nothing nicer than heading down to Rye/Rosebud for a session on a sunny mid-week/mid-winter day.

Keep an eye out on the tides with Rosebud. You generally want to head out when the tides are high or its a little more difficult if you're a beginner. The sandbanks can be a little dodgy if you pick up speed and don't know how to control your speed properly.

Also recommend going to the spot that is closer to sorrento where the parking lot is on the beach. The other one requires walking between a narrow gap in the trees which can be a little intimidating for a newbie.

that beach is marked by 14 on the road.. also while we are dishing newbie advice - there's not alot of beach so be careful - rescued 2 kites out of trees at 14 last week...

This should put the two spots into perspective.

Yeah, the sandbanks in Rosebud are risky. Recently started the session enjoying the flat water and did a nice faceplant in 5cm water 2h later. Watch the tide!

The up side with face plants is they are high in entertainment value for those taking a break onshore.

looks right to me.

"grassy knoll" with gusty launch opposite the safeway (end of Boneo).

Other beach has bit more launch area (still quite small), but straight onto water.

Buy your self a set of ankle straps for your wetsuit, nothing like 10L of water in your wet suit to dampen your session!
$15 on ebay.
Or if you buy booties, buy kite specific booties. As my surf booties tore open on there first session!
