per BOM today: Northerly below 10 knots and afternoon seabreezes of similar strength then winds tending east to northeasterly at 10 knots tonight.

maybe an indicator of a very good season coming up

El Ninio is kicking in, dry cold winters followed by hot dry summer = lots of seabreezes

spare a thought for the farmers though

Hmmm.
An El Nino results from warmer sea temperatures, thus the temperature differences are less therefore the thermal differences are reduced, whereby creating lower land mass water temperature variation. Less temp variation means less air pressure differences (good sea breezes are created when land heats faster than the water, Greater air pressure differences) and weeker seabreeze hence more like Autumnal conditions. Notice the water temp off Sydney is 20+c now (well above normal) and this current draws down to Marlo (semi tropical fish are living longer there, they usually die out due to the cold sth ocean temp), unfortunately a possible very quick and increased heating of ocean than normal - in late Spring early Summer so.... Possible summer doldrums but this might result in more northerly winds of stronger strength.

A lose lose situation for all.

dry land will heat a lot faster than warm water, thereby getting the differential required

I am tipping a block buster season

Lets hope so,

But if you say that a seabreeze happened the other day then hmmmm?

If you understand then environment particularly Melbourne and Victoria, winter weather patterns are northerly first followed by southerly buster. This is why snow falls in winter if the high is further inland and low generates in the Antarctic Ocean.

Sorry dude but a wet spring will cause high levels of evaporation and tranevaporation in the start of summer thus reducing land surface temperatures, the unusual hot ocean will create less air pressure differences with lower seabreeze wind strength i hope you like big kites and foil boards.

Last El Nino but not as big was 2009. Average seabreeze was 14 knots.

definitely happened - it was forecast by BOM and it came in, albeit very light

I will try to get the graph

From BOM today:

El Niño in the tropical PacificThe ENSO tracker was upgraded to EL NIÑO status on 12 May 2015. This followed El Niño thresholds being exceeded in the tropical Pacific oceanic and atmospheric data, and consensus among climate models monitored by the Bureau that the event would be sustained.El Niño is often associated with below-average rainfall across eastern Australia in winter and spring, and also warmer-than-normal daytime temperatures over the southern half of the country.

So BOM is saying below average rain in spring and high temps

I remember a season around 2008 I think, that we were getting excellent seabreezes in October - I will check the year

In this BOM document they state that Stronger Seabreezes are an impact of El nino

Cheers Ice for your posts (& the direct email - a bit intense...)

Very interesting the seasons of the past 10+ years, all of them are out of wack. Changing Climate is definitely *+#?!'ing the weather conditions up, I can agree on that.
I work in the environment profession, with very close ties to climate and meteorology. So, it was my prediction not the BOM's.

I've noticed it is was northerly for several days with no seabreeze and is going to be another string of northerly winds again, around 20+c land temp (even warmer inland) and 12c ocean temp.

Lucky i live on the Morn Pen and have the luxury of front or back beaches, wind, waves and crowd's depending.

Yep, 2008 I had many filthy after work sessions packing up at dusk and having a few coldies sitting on the wall watching the sun set and the "fashion jogger" babes (back in the St Kilda/Elwood days, before it became another suburb of England).
Another year (forgotten which one as they all blend together) driving to Inverloch almost every weekend in October.

Hope you get out for 60± session this summer season.

Bugger finally convinced the wife to move to St kilda for those after work seabreezes. Now I'll have to convince her to move to rosebud

This afternoon's wind might be an indication of what is to follow in late spring and summer

I find the best conditions for a seabreeze at Altona are when a high system is coming over Vic.

So when the prevailing wind is a light southerly but sunny - max temp mid to low 25 degrees in summer. The seabreeze turbo boosts the light southerly.

Today's conditions are similar, except the sun is still not very hot yet

It is still very early in the season so don't expect much yet, but here's hoping
