Hi all, keen to know where people launch from at Mentone, and where to kite to keep the lifesaving club happy. Not sure if there is a specific "windsport zone". cheers

Hey ppete

Most people launch in front of the grass area which is south of the life saving club. From there to stay away from the no boating zone and life saving club you need to ride south (usually upwind). If you're a beginner I would either self launch further south, before the old pier is a good spot or get a launch then walk down the beach, but Menotone can be gusty on the beach so do this with caution.

Great thanks MrTwist. Can get upwind alright so no problems. Just need some wind!

Cheers.

Because of the cliff setup, it can be a bit dicey - you get a bit of a venturi effect through the spot where the grass "ramps" down to the beach. I ride there when the wind has a little east in it. The lifesaving club is usually pretty cool - just stay well clear when they are running their training evenings. I find it easier to body drag out a bit before getting on the board.

Another good spot is Ricketts Point, but the run is short before you end up with no land between you and Altona.

Cheers lostinlondon. I used to sail at the yacht club at ricketts - from memory a lot of rocks, reef and lots of windsurfers? does it get a bit dicey?

There is a section of beach upwind of the kiosk that is about 100m long. Clear air, but once you get past the end there's nothing downwind of you for a long way. I've seen a few guys out there and it doesn't seem too bad - not my cup of tea as it's a real flat spot (a bit like the kiddy pool).
