The best kite for a beginner to advance on is the one that your instructor uses in your lessons. Once you've moved past the initial lessons, anything with decent range and lots of depower will serve you well to learn.

A few questions to help with some proper answers...
What kite(s) did you use in your lessons?
How heavy are you?
What city are you in, or where do you plan on kiting?

go for any kite 07 and onwards. anything earlier is either not worth getting because its getting old, or its not safe. any bow/hybrid kite will be fine, even some c-kites like the torch which have more depower. an 10-12m wld be fine for melbourne weather, if you are between 70-90 kgs.
