I have not kited the Island, but I have surfed it for years and know it like the back of my hand. Flynns Reef is perfect for surfing when the winds are S-SE and swells over 2 mtrs out back. But for kiting it has to be the opposite, all the way from the North. So you'll have to time it when it's wind blown on a NW-N, maybe NE wind but expect it to be gusty and unreliable due to the land mass across the bay.

Good luck and let us know how you went. Mind you, the surfers there will not appreciate you kiting in their mecca surf spot - even if it's on shore and crappy to surf in. Phil Island surfing locals are nazis.

Every surf beach seems to have heavy locals these days unless it's a 'tourist' break that everyone knows about.

Kiters seem a lot more relaxed :)

If you look at the maps NE is practically offshore for Flynns. Not sure what the attraction of Flynns is for kiting, (perhaps because it the only wave spot that works in a Northerly?). Even as a surfing wave is very short ride but fun when big and if its any good just paddle out. There is a very small take off spot so expect to dodge lots of surfers. Anything outside half an hour of high tide the swell completely disappears and rocks start appearing pretty much like the rest of the island. Cat bay (right point) appears to be a much better bet, plenty more space and surfers cant hassle you as they have to paddle a lot more.

Corrected. Yes, Flynns itself is much rockier than Cat Bay, which would be more suitable for kiting, but it's a small tight bay. I think to be honest Woolamai would be better with plenty of space and generally has better winds from the South for kiting. I don't think locals would care much there as when it's onshore the place is avoided entirely by surfers, and they head to Flynns or Cat Bay. Even Penguin Parade might be a better beach for kiting. And why not Cowes on a Northerly? Plenty of flat water beach, but watch out for boats and the pier I guess. But truly flat water and perfect kiting conditions can be had further south towards Waratah Bay.
