First thing I learnt was a self rescue, by all means check to see that a fellow kiter is ok. Conditions today were no way too difficult to self rescue, and if you can't help your self then you shouldn't be out. How many kites does it take to rescue one person any way?

I had a saftey system fail after coming unhooked after a hard crash at melville today. Kite went rolling off downwind and I had a very long swim in from a long way out. I didn't expect anyone to tow me in, I just swam. But my kite was heading for the houses at the North end of point and I though with all the kiters there, someone would have gone down and grabed it. It could have torn itself to bits on the fence, or worse, take out a cyclist. Ulitimately it was my fault for not inspecting the entire length of my 5th line but it's in all kiters best interest to keep a run away kite from causing property damage.

Luckily, the kite came to rest pretty harmlessly in the grass and I suffered no more than a very long swim.

I usually find people at melville fairly helpfull, thing is if its all they way down the point sometimes with kiting tunnel vision it doesn't get noticed...

Another kiter released there kite on the south end about 20m out from shore not sure what the reason was.... The kite was grabbed about 100m downwind luckily still on the shore didn't fly over the road etc but it did fly past about 5 kiters setting up who had tunnel vision in there own setup.

I was going to run after it but since there were so many people downwind I assumed it was ok

Blue and Orange North Rebel @ about 2 or 2:30. Not a biggie, just could have lost the kite or pissed off a resident if it ended up on the road on in someone's yard. I was a long was out, past the buoys, when I lost it so it ended up WAAAAAY down past the rock wall near the yacht club end where it came to rest in the grass in front of an empty lot.

Again, ultimately it was my responsibilty as it was my gear that failed because I didn't check it properly. Glad kite and kiter came out okay. I actually sorted out my lines, relaunched, and got a long session in after.

There isn't really much you can do to help unless they self-rescue other than grab a board! There is no harm in asking thats for sure, I had a mare at woodmans point a week ago where someone went thru my lines and it ended going inside out and twisted around! So even when I released the safety it was still powering up and I was on a collision course for the pier!! fortunatly for me the guy came back and gave me a tow and another guy grabbed my board so big thanks to them! I have always found everyone helpful regardless of where I go out :)

It doesnt matter how many kiters it takes to rescue 1 person, its the offer that counts ! Even if he is ok.

I just think if your out there and see another in some difficulty, a quick "are u ok ?" deosnt harm and puts yr mind at rest.

yeah, we should all look out for each other, but beginners, please dont try and help if your not good enough yet... its very easy to make it worse. In relation to the original post, perhaps the other kiters hadnt the experience or confidence to attempt a rescue of another kitesurfer? after all, its not like the IKO or BKSA teach it as part of the standard courses
Ill help a kiter in need, so long as i can do so safely. But the first rule of lifesaving is to never to put yourself in danger.

it doesnt take much to help others out, someone saved me a bloody long swim at leighton on australia day when my leading edge bladder let go. cheers for bringing my board in and then coming back out to tow me in absolute champion.

Was out at pinaroo last week windsurfing, about 1klm out and noticed a guy swiming in the middle of now where, thought what the. I dropped off the plane and put the sail in the water and yelled out to see if he was okay. Apparently the leading edge blader crapped it self and the kite blew into shore, towed him in hanging off my back foot strap. It doesnt take much to see if someone needs a hand because one day it might be you
