Another season and a lack of WAKSA to guide noobs and euro's at Leighton.

6 kites set up middle of dog beach, couple of dudes kiting directly out from of the port beach clubhouse, dude on white and flouro yellow switchy 2012 superman down the beach with kids close by.. And that was in 20 mins of coming in for a break in between sessions.. Usually I would say something, but I was knackered.. Juddy's local needs some WAKSA input and flyers handed out.

Prob not the only spot either..

This is a common occurense, Unfortunatly Juddy has resigned so please feel free to contact WAKSA and get some reps down there, the last thing we need is another incident, and to have more restrictions put on the responsible ones.

I know juddy resigned, I even offered last season to go down there and hand out flyers... I haven't renewed my membership because they seem to care more about organising comps and chasing membership, rather than get kite spots under control. Yeah its run by committe volunteers but how many people are on the committee and why can't they spend some time getting local spots under control?

Keeping spots open shouldn't/can't be left just to WAKSA....IMO, individual kiters have a responsibility to advise/counsel/chat to noobs & Teuro's when they see something not quite right, including even when we're tired JP....

Sure, it was busy Sunday arvo & I managed to chat to a bunch of new German & French kiters about Leighton specific launch/landing zones etc, but it's up to all of us to pass on the local info at our spot, where ever that might be.

If we want to keep our beaches open (think of the nightmare that Melville has become) we need to walk the walk, not just talk it online....speak now or forever lose our beaches.....

The WAKSA committee is down to 5 people because whilst all the kites expect WAKSA to be organising wave comps, course racing, kite stock, WAKSA has already had to postpone Redkite. Not many kites are willing to give up their own time to help their sport.

Feel free to get up off your ass and help WAKSA. I am pretty sure they will not turn down the help.

None of the WAKSA committee kite at Leighton regularly.

It's your spot do something rather than just moan on Seabreeze.

So you are not a WAKSA member, don't agree with their focus, don't support them, but still expect them to do all the hard work?

What's wrong with this picture?

As Juddy rightly said it is up to all of us to sort these issues out.

I completely agree. It is EVERYONES responsability to educate on the rules of the beach and about smart practice.

Thats one of the positives about our community. Say Hi, give a hand and meet a new person. You get what you put in!

Judging by:
1) the kiter who cut through the Windsurfing area inside the sand bar near cunningham street at Melville for about 10 minutes yesterday and got snotty when told to p$%# off.
2) the three euro's who started setting up amongst the windsurfers about two weeks ago and then got snotty when I handed them a WAKSA flyer showing where they could take off and land.
3) the family group who turned up and similarly got snotty when kindly shown the kiting area and handed a flyer to show that it wasn't an 'us vs them issue'.

...with ambassadors such Mr (1) (2) and (3) above, you guys may not have to worry about Melville for much longer.

did said kiter cut in front of any windsurfer and cause any accidents or act in a dangerous manner .

Or was said windsurfer angry and was snotty back at you due to you being a douche for no reason ?

And no it wasn't me but i know who you are talking to you .

I guess by your attitude of telling kiters to piss off maybe i should yell and tell the windsurfers who seem to come down into the kiting area to **** off and act like a tosser as well huh ?

Two windsurfers on saturday doing speed runs in amongst the kiters , or the learners who seem to drift down into us .

But all they are greeted with is a smile .

Last time i checked that area wasn't a designated windsurfing area, much like the kiting area is a designated area . Just windsurfers claim that spot having been there for 50 years and that's how it was back in the good old days .

There's a huge difference between a windsurfer going into a kite area and vice versa. Windsurfers take up very little room, rarely get in the way and if it's a noob the damage potential to oneself and other is pretty limited.

So whats the point of a kite area?? surely breaking the code is breaking the code whether its dangerous or not,,maybe if I see windsurfers in the kite zones I think **** it Im not playing by the rules either, this just rolls on and on until its just a real mess, windsurfers just get more grumpy than ever, the chip on their shoulder gets bigger, and the stupidity that is the whole Windsurfer vs kiter bollocks gets worse..

Did said kiter cut me off? Yes.

Was it dangerous? I believe 40 meters of kite cord coming at me is dangerous when i have a vertical mast.

Did I tell him to Piss off? Yes (after he cut me off)

Was it open water? No, it was inside the sandbank, less than 100m from the bank and at least 500meters from the southern kite surfing area marker.

Was it a Westerly wind with parallel runs along the bank? No

Do I condone Windsurfers doing speed runs into the Kite Surfing Launching Area? No.

Are you welcome to tell said windsurfers to piss off? Yes, as far as I am concerned. Your area is just as packed as ours. (Although the council hasn't relegated a windsurfing area as such - as we haven't been advised we are a concern to residents.)

Point I was making was that with jerks...more people are getting pissed off than ever.

The reason kiters have issues at Melville are in direct relation to: where they set up. Putting kites into cars and houses, et cetera. I am not aware of conditions being put on Windsurfers.

Cutting into where I was, was a jerk of a thing to do. Same as the windsurfers going into your area.

Thanks for your feedback. Next time I see someone setting up to fly a kite outside of the zone I will NOT hand them a WAKSA flyer and politely explain that they are endangering the ongoing use of melville by other reasonable kiters... I will simply call the ranger. Enjoy your kiting.

Most kites have 25 metre lines not 40 .

All the ranger can do is hand out parking fines.

I think they actually have quite a bit more authority then parking inspectors.

their authority stops at the waters edge , can't do anything to you if you're on the water

Interesting choice to whinge about WAKSA not getting out there enough, looks like there are a lot of us who Kite and happily enjoy what WAKSA does for us but we don't support them in return!

WAKSA need at least 15 people to volunteer to help out for a couple of hours at the L2L, while some people have put their hands up to help out, they are still short.

The Committee volunteer their time to get events like this happening, plus plenty of extra stuff behind the scenes, here is a chance for us to give 'em a hand.

Surely out of all of us on this forum and even those who nominated but didn't get a spot in the race, we can get a few extra hands to help out on the day.

If you're interested, just shoot an email to [email protected], they are running a volunteer briefing on Tuesday evening.
