Hi all, whilst setting up my kite on the back of the pond last weekend, a ranger walked through the grass to tell me I can't set up my kite in that area as I might stand on bird eggs... Though she walked through the very place they would likely be... She also asked if I was with a school. I asked why. She said because a school has a permit and they are allowed to rig their kites anywhere around the pond, including the back side. So naturally i questioned how a permit protects the eggs and she had nothing that made any sense at all... She said next time rig up near the surfe/yacht club and walk it down after launching. Any one else have this recently? Is it a national park and is there any rules about not rigging a kite on the beach anywhere around the pond?

I look forward to your comments!

There are a couple of signs that tell you not to rig on the sand bar as you enter the beach area. (They also point out the windsurf/ kitesurf area and right of way rules ) been there for at least 6 years.

Be careful if you launch and land from wa surf/ yacht club ive seen a lot of situations where begginers have narrowly missed serious injury. You can launch your kite on the beach across from wa surf or just by the pond much safer. The rules are stupid but have to keep the council happy.

Dont screw around at the pond....ever!.... dont get cheeky with rangers...... do keep touros in check, they require managing...,... theres shetloads of em, there will be more next year........and the year after....,,..the pond is all over the internet now........

dont wanna lose this spot or have it over managed by councils.....councils dont think the way we do. They just dont want any accidents of any kind and local ratepayers are their stakeholders......

respect locals wherever you kite.......... they have the most to lose..,.......,.....give them some space and dont piss them off...........ever!

the whole area is handled by CALM Rangers or whoever they are now, they can do what they please, and can limit access. Have some respect, see the whole picture from community eyes, not just the couple of hours it is windy.
The grassland next to safety bay yacht club is not a launching spot, but they do and TEACH others to as well.
accident waiting to happen, not nearly as bad as the lunatic who teaches people halfway between there and Mersey point, with twenty meters of beach then road. God I hoope this guy has good insurance. Cringeworthy stuff watching a beginner here,

simply put, These guys are not "shops" or registered or certified or ANYTHING doubt he even went to school teaching people in 30 knot winds that close to power lines and other hard expensive objects... It's a no brainer sorry.

Definently a quick way to hospilisation and complete ban of wind sports in the area though!!!!

But maybe you where "trolling" and I fell for it.. Not even sure anymore lol

I have no affiliation with the school in question, ( I'm a windsurfer) and I had often thought it was a stupid location to teach kiting.

But I happened to speak to the guy who runs the school a few weeks back and mentioned that I thought the road/power lines were a bit close for comfort. He told me he applied to the council for a permit to teach at a different location but all he was offered was his current location and it was a question of that or nothing!!?? Go figure.

If this is infact the case I take back my comments on the schools competence but still believe that spot is an accident waiting to happen and it's not like the area is lacking safer option for the council to suggest.

Hey everyone,

I don't like to get involved in Seabreeze threads too often. However, I feel like I need to defend our position a little bit once people start bashing us for things we don't do.

We NEVER teach our students to setup or launch next to the Safety Bay Yacht Club.
We do not fly students kites any where other than in the water, or on the beach to launch & land.
We do not tell people to launch and land their kites on the grass area next to the SBYC.
If anyone ever asks any of our staff if they can/should launch there, we will tell them that they can, but there is so much beach and open sand both on the beach and in the pond that is a much better place to launch and land.
There is a lot of people who regularly launch and land there. That is up to them, the same as the people who land their kites on the grass directly adjacent to the pond in amongst trees and powerlines.

We have asked both the Department of Parks & Wildlife, and City Of Rockingham to put more signage up in the area telling people it is dangerous to do. So far we haven't seen any action on this.

As far as the rangers, the last update I was given was that kiters aren't suppose to setup on the southern side of the fence that runs from Safety Bay beach, across the point and into the pond. Our school is allowed to setup, launch and land out on the ocean side of the pond sandbar, as per our licence from the DPAW.

Cheers
Drew

no one in the iko should be teaching in anything outside of 10-25knots amount of schools ive worked for that have tried to force me to teach outside of that and i just tell them im the instructor those are the limits thats the end of it (generally im in my wetsuit because yeeehoooooo its 26knots today no work!) so whoever he is teaching in 30knots get his name find him on the iko list get photo and time stamp of current weather and send to the iko. pretty simple. despite what everyone thinks they arent all that happy with instructors who injure students.

If you travel 1km up the rd and across a certain causeway there is an island much much larger than the back of the pond sand spit. This said island is a sanctuary to many plants, animal and 1 cozillion terns!
Bugger off I'm kiting back of the pond! The 10 terns right at the end can watch me if they so desire!

There is no issue with kiting out the back of the pond. The ranger is concerned about activities (including fishers) limited to the nature reserve/on dry land.
