Hello there, long time lurker, first time poster (int he WA forum!).

A friend and I will be heading to your glorious shores from the east coast. Staying in Lancelin.

Forecast for this week is South West.

Are there any must do downwinders? Lancelin to Wedge?

Also, I recall seeing there was an 'upwinder' bus that shuttled people up and down - do you know if this is still going?

Cheers!

Looks like you're on the money for your timing for some wind... Lancelin to Wedge is an epic run but you won't find a shuttle for that - there was an upwinder bus in Perth but I am not sure if still running...

“Are there any must do downwinders? Lancelin to Wedge?” – Yes

“'upwinder' bus that shuttled people up and down - do you know if this is still going?” – Not going anymore, Jo pulled the pin on it many years ago.

Just exercise caution with Lano to Wedge. Half that length is defence exclusion zone (highway to the waterline)

yes you can kite it but if you have an issue and land on the beach it’s very very hard to get mates in to help you. And if they are bombing they close half the damn ocean too. like up to about 10km out.

so do it but with plenty of folks and sensibly. Not everyone has lol

consider Wedge to Grey though, there’s wayyyyy more breaks along that

Agreed with Mark,

I've done the Lano-Wedge downwinder about 5 times over the years. It's awesome but risky. about 40-42 km of total distance depending on your tacks.

You have to bring water, and even food for emergency. Also at least a phone with good coverage in a waterproof pouch.

If something goes wrong it's a LOOOONG walk back to civilization.

You may want to do a smaller downwinder from Ledge Point to Lancelin which would be a lot safer.

the upwinder bus service is long discontinued in Perth. unfortunately no public transport busses that run along the coast in Perth either as far as i'm aware. You can always Uber or Didi.
