Hi everyone
While all you boys and girls have been playing games chasing each other on the beach, I have been hard at work designing with the CAD program. I have designed an entirely new construction technique which I will utilise in the building of my sand yacht. I am going to build a Class 5 type of yacht that has a "Y" shape frame. I am indebted to Paul for the original design and idea. My new design is in the building style of things. The two rear Axle tubes will be mounted via an internal bolt in each section to hold them onto the main section of the frame. There will be no evidence of a bolt showing when they are assembled. The tubes will be held from rotating by a small flange that is held by a small 8mm bolt only 16mm long. I will post the drawings for you as soon as I can. The only unfortunate part of the design is that a lathe is essential to make all the parts. I may incorporate within the design the ability to set the rear wheels on a castor angle of 4 degrees or more by changing 4 bolts to another position, about 2 minutes work on each side. I am hoping to get some tube that is 63.5mm dia x 2mm thick. A little thicker wall would be even better.
What would be the ideal overall width of the rear axle/wheel assembly? And what would you recommend as the wheel base?
I think you will like the design and I am looking forward to your (critical ) comments.

How about making telescopic rear axles and front spine so that you can vary the width and wheel base. Perhaps you could make one yacht that can race in both class 5 and class 6.

To race a yacht in both Class5 and Class6 you would need 2 sails of different sizes!!

or one sail with a reef point

although I think the scruitineers would have a major issue with any of these ideas.

Kody, you posed the question of base and track. If you intend class 5 for competition you may find the rules say 2500mm axle to axle base. And the LY (track) must be able to be wheeled between 2 posts that are set no more than 2000mm apart, with pilot in seat and fully rigged.
If this is not wholly correct, please correct me!

You may discover in your trials that a chassis stiff enough for a 5 is too stiff for a 6. remember that a 5 will wiegh 50kgs and a 6/mini should come down to 30 kg.
Class 5 dimensions are pretty good to follow.
Im doing all my experiments with the Lake Lefroy MINI specs. This is keeping costs down and the results suprise me every time I sail
