the nut holding a safety guard slipped and some finger tips met some idling mowerblades during a tune up. the tips went into a gap where yuo couldnt possibly put your fingers.splat

Great to see these two yachts coming out of your factory Landyacht. That seat looks like a beauty, colour and all .

I was wondering whether you could post a picture of your mould? No dimensions required, just wouldn't mind seeing how that part of the process looks.

Keep up the great work and take care of those digits. They come in useful every now and then , especially when building mad sailing machines.

EDIT: One other question; where do you get your fibreglassing materials from?

when we started needing bigger quantities I priced getting it all from Perth, and found one place that had all the bits I needed to do molding. If I need smaller quantities I go to a local paint shop who now gets in bigger quantities for me. I refuse to pay the absurd prices at the hardware Wharehouse.
You do need to shop around. We pay $120-150 for 20kg resin but freight from perth can vary. $30-90 depending on the supplier

We have got resin as low as $99 . It went off very quickly.
shop is called FIBREGLASS RESIN AND SALES
You should find shops like it in your state.
I'll do some mold photos tommorow. The measurements are as per the drawings I posted

Hey Paul, I'm starting to look around for windsurfer masts. Can you provide some info on what we should look for and how to reinforce it. There's one over here for sale with 30% carbon for $75, would that be suitable to start with?

The mold is about as basic as you can get. this mold was the left over bit from the promo mold but the molds I made for those 2 micro seats a few months ago took less than 1 hour to create the plug , 1hour for the molds and I have it handy whenever Ive mixed any gelcoat and put the leftovers onto those 2 molds

Hi Paul after reading every thing I can find here I have a few questions

Is the Lefroy Mini a racing class yacht or just one for fun?

In one of the post you mentioned making a jig but you never in cluded any further information about doing so.

I like the look of the frames that the material is the same dimentions IE: a blowcart

could it be built out of say 22mm od round or would I need a diferent frame design?

I figured all I would need is a pipe bender and tubing notcher LOL

I have never done fiber glassing but I can use a sewing machine could a canvass seat be made?

The mast can you make it or does ever one just buy that?

And finally sail making I have made cloths and belts in my fathers factory

Is worth making the sail or not?

thanks Adrian

Hi Paul after reading every thing I can find here I have a few questions

BOTH ,we race them, they are as fast as ablokart.,just cheaper if you build it yourself

In one of the post you mentioned making a jig but you never in cluded any further information about doing so.
Ther is a photo of the jigin the post , I will spend time showing how mine works later. basically it is a steel frame made of junk and offcuts to hold it all in shape whilst it is welded

I like the look of the frames that the material is the same dimentions IE: a blowcart

could it be built out of say 25mm od round or would I need a diferent frame design?

I figured all I would need is a pipe bender and tubing notcher LOL

the materials I describe and use are what I have found cheap and effective. going to 25mm tube is a different design which I stopped building 20 years ago because this way is simpler and IMHO better. no bender. The biggest luxury I have is a 325mm drops saw and a good drill stand, both now 20 years + old.

I have never done fiber glassing but I can use a sewing machine could a canvass seat be made? .
the only fibreglassing on the wooden seat is on the seams. It is a great opportunity to learn a new skill, that has great possibilities. A good FG shop will give great advice. by shopping there you will save money ,compared to the big hardware store.
A canvas seat will require a different design.

The mast can you make it or does ever one just buy that

And finally sail making I have made cloths and belts in my fathers factory

Is worth making the sail or not?
We buy second hand sailboard masts and sails and recut them ourselves,. I am putting a photo essay up at the moment on that subject.often we are given them by some of the generous souls on this site who love to see there old bits recycled.I sew on a old singer20U which does all but the thickest monofilm.

thanks Adrian

My suggestion to a starter would be to build as I have done ,then with experience and new ideas you have of your own build the next model. you could recycle the wheels/sails etc on the next machine.
Having sewing ability and access is a huge advantage. so why not look for a mate who is a good welder,or can glass.
when I have the current yachts finished I will work on some easy modifications so that the yachts are more suitable to younger children the present yachts suit kids over 12

The finished product looks great Paul!! Just for interest when you take it out can you post a profile shot with an adult sitting in it so we can get an idea of how close your head gets to the sheets. Might give a better indication of scale.

G'day Hills, Gizmo,

I'm in Melbourne briefly to visit new grandson. When I get back feel free to come & look at L L mini, sails etc.
I'll be around next saturday if you want to rig it etc.

I've got a couple of home jobs to do first & then I'll be building Promo & probably a couple more minis.

I'll be looking to make a mould of seat for mini at some stage so will be happy to have some helpers....

If Bill is offering to give hands on fibreglassing lesson you should jump at the chance, take notes and photos

A separate mudguard would be in the bling category. the wooden seat has a raised centre which act as a natural guard . as does the glass version. Being a short yacht the crud from the front wheel goes under , but the rear wheels do throw a bit, the key is to go fast and close your mouth.
Mud guards are for wimps anyway [}:)]

here is a shot of the boom height when set for racing . although it looks low ,you have good vision through the gap between the sail and boom.

the sail can be raised for cruising by shortening the top rope holding the head up.
the pilot has his legs straight and braced which is how you would sit when sailing fast downwind, upwind you would bend the knees, slide forward a bit and perhaps lean out when the gust hits
