i am interested in building a Lefroy Mini and have a couple of questions
1-rake of mast step
2-in the 'Lefroy Mini Yacht build' by what I can workout the over all measurements
are 1.48m wide by 1.60m from c of wheel to c of wheel
based on Land Yacht Sailing > General > class six (mini's) the max is
1.85m wide by 2.00m from c of wheel to c of wheel
is there a reason for not going the max to handle max sail area
3-how did the 2 you built go for weight
4-i would like to thank and congratulate you on your post "Lefroy Mini Yacht build"

Well picked! I will ammend drawings post haste. It should be 10degrees. I use 7degrees on the bigger cl 5 yachts

The history of the mini is that one of our constraints was to have the same wheelbase as the BLOKART so we could race together. Lefroy has about half and half. the minis still pack down well . the galv pipe model fits in the back of our new Kia RIO . 2 in the back our Landcruiser. 3 on the roof rack. A yacht built in this style in the cl6 specs did go faster but I scrapped it in favour of the closer racing .

3-how did the 2 you built go for weight

Fence post modernist came out at 30kg and the pink yacht at 31kg. I intend to build a higher sided seat to replace the wooden seat so the kids will be a bit more secure so it will probably jump 2kg

thanks accepted. So glad to have finally got it down on paper so I dont have to keep explaining it from the beginning, only the finer details.
You will really enjoy the yacht, great in a small area. yet this is the design that I finally managed to sail the full length of Lake Lefroy in
. Feel free to ask any questions. There is no such thing as a stupid question, only stupid mistakes

Welcome Ian, keep us updated on your progress

Hey Paul, you should put a note on that thread asking people that if they build one to log on here, as Ian has, and let us know so we can get an idea on how many there are in the Lefroy mini fleet.

So where did you bury him, Promo girl? Identifying a woman's age on a public forum is a hanging offence isn't it?

Just a quick question about the rear axle assembly, in the first series of pics (1548855 and 1550649) the axle appears to be kicked back, in the later pics of the galv tube chassis (1552118 and 1570518) the axle appears to be kicked forward and then in the completed pics (1615439 and 1650778) the axle appears to be kicked in the vertical plane, this latter affect may be due to the axles flexing with the weight of the driver, could you please confirm which way you intended the axle to be kicked. I hope to make a couple of chassis during winter so that we can have them running in time for some action at Sandgate during summer on days that we are blown out at Humpybong. Not quite sure what to do with the seat yet as the fibreglass unit that you have made certainly looks really cool, maybe I'll have to make up a mould to make something similar, if Rattlehead comes up with something in the meantime i might try to use someting else. Havn't had much of a chance to run the alum one that i have made yet, we took it to a large park down near Ammberly Air Base one Sunday for a trial run but with a fading breeze we didn't get much a chance to gat any good runs, had a couple of mates push me around until they lost intrest, we the pushed my wife around for a while and as she weighs about half what i weigh things went a lot easier, we are waiting now for a day when we get a honking westerly to give it a proper run.

as per the drawings the axles kick up . the angle on each side is created by 2 dropsaw /grinder cuts which are then bent up and welded back up the bend gives you the wheel camber. the cambered wheels give improved traction, better resistance to leeway and allows the tyres to flex better when pumped up harder. photos please

Hey Paul I have another couple of question about the mini.

Do you know the approx angle you have set the mast support at.

I am going to make a couple of chassis using 40 N.B. Med Galv pipe (48.3 OD x 3.2 Wall). as I have a bit of this sitting around the workshop at the moment.

What is the average base diam of the windsurfer masts that you use. I hav'nt got as far as finding one yet to measure the diam, I see that you use a 50 N.B Extra Light section for the mast support as this fits most of the mast bases, do you just sleeve it to suit different diam masts as need ?

Thanks in advance
Corey

mast angle of 10degrees on minis ,7 on cl5. will build next cl 5with 10degrees also.
most of the masts Ive found have been 50 to 52mm od. there are some really old WNDSURFER masts, blue in colour which are really skinny. they are worth saving to build a MICRO yacht With the alloy mast I built for the mini the OD was 48mm . I packed it out with a piece of PVA

Hi All,
Congratulations to Paul. He seems to have sparked off a building frenzy of Lefroy Minis.

The Lefroy Mini Specs are on the site somewhere and it appears there will substantial numbers of them built so we could end up with credible numbers to justify formation of a seperate class.

If I have read it right, Paul has developed the yacht concept and created the "Lefroy Mini Yacht Building Thread" as a budget alternative for would be land yacht sailors who balk at the cost of commercially built "One Design" yachts and that this is the reason he has used wheel base dimensions similar to some of these commercially built yachts. Great concept!!

The concept I like the most is "Aussie Innovative Improvisation" versus "Kiwi Korprit Kulcha".

The other thing I read from Paul is that he is an absolute minimalist when it comes to rules. For this reason and that the Lefroy Mini is his idea, I suggest it is only he who is qualified to answer and decide on the following question.

Should the Lefroy Mini be designated as a class 6 yacht under that class's current parameters as written by Brian Reynolds; should the Lefroy Mini have it's own specific class design rule; or should we go for the throat and say that as long as it has a wheel base of 1.65m maximum front to rear axle centre and 1.4m maximum between rear wheel centres and maximum sail area of 5.5 m2, the yacht meets the Lefroy Mini design rule??

The last option has the advantage for the home builder to innovate further and explore the possibilities of different structures and sail designs but of course should not be used as a way of fitting thousands of other yachts into the class for the sake of adding numbers, even though that may be a by product of that choice.

If and once a decision has been made on this question, might I suggest that Laurie be asked if he can slide a post in at the top of the "Lefroy Mini Build" thread that has a couple of photos of the yachts, parameters of the yacht and possibly a brief of the design philosophy and approximate cost break down.

This would be of great benefit to newcomers to the forum and may well fire their imagination by way of giving them a recognisably achievable goal of having a land yacht at an affordable price.
