Let me first say hello from Maine USA I have been lurking and learning on this site for some time. A little about me: I am a blacksmith and welder with my own shop, and as a kid we use to sail ice racers. I live by a long flat beach and I am now building a land yacht from parts I am getting for free off of Craigs List in their free listings. I want to show others that you can build a cool projects from parts other would cast off and send to the land fill. I am good with the fabrication part of the frame but it is the rigging that is giving me a hard time. I can not seem to find any real good photos of how to rig the lines for the sail. If I just missed the posts let me know if not if any one has rigging photos that would be a huge help. Thank you for any help you can give.

If you post a pic of your sail and yacht that would give us something to go on

There are basically 2 ways of rigging the sails on present day yachts..

1. Use an existing sailboard rig and original wishbone boom, the advantage is its simple to get, rig and get sailing, The negative side of this sort of rig is it fixes the draft or camber of the sail (Its a bit like driving a car stuck in 2nd gear)

2. Use a sail suited to a flexible mast, this set up changes the draft of the sail as you sheet the sail in and out, this sort of setup needs a boom at the foot [bottom] of the sail. This rig changes the amount of power v speed needed for the yacht [Like an auto transmission in a car]

The rig setup is often personal taste and what things you have access to, like a sewing machine

I concur number 1, we really need a better idea of what youve got so far , then we can suggest you build something along the lines and size of a Lake Lefroy mini it being a great starter size, that is simple , sails well and has 99% of the bugs ironed out.
we also get rather excited when one get built from rubbish

It will be the size of the mini and pretty close to the same style. I will post pics of the frame once it is welded up. Today I picked up for free 3 windsurf sails, 3 masts, 3 wishbones and 2 boards what stinks is the guy told me I forgot 2 more sails, mast boards and wish bones . The boards I will save for another project but I figure with the rest of the kit I should be able to make one good sail. I am a big dope I did not see your sail diagram and now that I have it looks very easy. I will copy what works. This forum is great thanks for the help and I am sure I will have many more questions.

Yo Nighttide
It probably is a bit late but if you haven't already seen the threads posted on cutting a RAF Dynamic www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/Land-Yacht-Sailing/Sail-making/The-Sail-Cut-and-Shut-RAF-dynamic/.
Landyacht and others put valuable feed back into my effort and I hung it on a mast only taped together and it looks good. It is waiting for me to pick it up on Thursday
