Yesterday I spent the whole day waiting for wind with my cart. It never showed up. Here's my questions:
1 - I'm thinking 'bigger sail' Wouldn't that always be the answer? You'd have more wind pushing the cart. And if it was So Windy as to be hazardous you could just let not sail as agressively, like letting the boom out a bit extra. I measured my sail to be like 4.5 or 5 sq m. Don't I need a 7.2
2 - I'm already thinking of a second cart. Would the cast aluminum wheels from a say 250-450 cc motor cycle hold up, as far as 'sideways stress'? I was thinking of using some with a dropped axle/frame configuration. I'd think it would provide a smoother ride. I'm not interested in competing, just a fun, smooth sail. I've had enough sitting/waiting. Thanks

If you study the threads, download the plans and build yourself a Lake Lefroy Mini Yacht, you will have a ton of fun building it and a ton of fun sailing a successful and proven design.

That design come from over thirty years experience sailing and building land yachts.

I used the design and love the yacht that has resulted. Cheers Cisco

I would second the build a mini suggestion, as it will give you some insight into what it takes to make something from the ground up. The M/C wheel idea will create all sorts of headaches but is not insurmountable( maybe your 3rd yacht).
with a LLM you could consider going to a 5 or 5.5m sail and add some reef points to reduce sail area. the " dont sheet in so tight "idea fails dramatically the moment you try to turn around[}:)]

Dudevato,

I have gone off the larger sail idea myself. I cut down a Wind Surfer Sail from 11sqm to around 6.5-7sqm. It is a Fat Head and does work in light winds on Tarmac BUT it becomes a Hand Full in gusty conditions. Thing is that your would be sailing slowly, from my part I don't think it was worth the cost of conversion. As my Std Sail I am using a 4.5-5sqm Normal style sail which is very good from around 15kmph but at 30kmph it feels like it is trying to bring the Stern About as there is a fair bit of the Ctr of Effort behind the rear wheels. For Wind Speeds above I am about to cut down another 11Sqm Speed Sail to around 4 - 4.5Sqm. This will entail a shorter Luff to Clew 1.5m and a little Fat Head as I am becoming convinced that Paul is right and 250 to 300mm will be more than ample. When you have the experience of traveling at a fair clip and having a sudden gust grab you and hurl you along with the feeling that the Butt of your Jeans is going to be torn from under you you too will start to think that perhaps a little less sail area will be great for those days of higher wind and perhaps it wold be expedient to do something else on those zero to marginal days other to sit on the Strip in a Limp Sailed Land Yacht and having people shake there heads in wonder at your tenacity..

Like it or No there will be days when sailing can not be done either the wind will be zero or Lunatic Soup Country. Paul and Cisco are right Have fun building a LLF and if you aren't happy with your wheels then have a look at azusa.com

Now there's a thought, mind you it goes against what the sport is all about and after seeing what the Mad Hatten Project is up to I've been sussing out some local hills with Bituminous tracks on them. It seems there are a bunch of them about but the local Police may get a little miffed if they catch me at it[}:)]. There are also these Large Packs of Black Doughnuts that go about Hunting Grav' Cars in Packs of 18 or 20, tends to get a bit messy.
