Dear Splitpin,
Thanks for the information re: helmets
as most of the photos are archive pics I think your comment maybe a little out of place! as all clubs now insist on the wearing of helmets during racing.
But as I haven't read the current "Landyacht Helmet Regulations" could you please direct us all so we can read them.
I don't wish to read about bicycle or motor cycle helmets or even rock climbing and car racing helmets.... I wish to be up to date with "Landyacht Helmet Regulations".
I also assume in that document will also contain the current "Seatbelt and Buckle Regulations"
Oh.... by the way anonymous postings "sets a bad example for up and coming landyachters..."

The point i was making is that people ride bicycles /off road motor bikes etc, if they value there safety all wear helmits .
Regarding the rules you asked for i dont have them as i dont need to know about them as i am not in the sport.

I am aware of your concerns.... many thanks.
The debate over which type of helmet is most suitable for landyachting has been around for years ... it often comes back to "How much respect do you have for your own head".
By the way I don't play golf, tennis or ride motor cycles.... but then again I don't try and be controversial with posts on their forums either!!

There ar times in life when you you just need to cruise or relax at speed. no matter the vehicle. I certainly dont own a bike helmet, the whole principal seems absurd to me. when RACING a landyacht I wouldnt have less than a MC helmet.
Please chill out guys, yes the forum was getting a tad quiet , but maybe the moons coming up and your all synchronizing your grumpy week

While the thoughts are there on the subject of safety ...."Seatbelts".
Many years ago I saw a very nasty situation with a 2 seater yacht at Goolwa beach.
The yacht was a "Freeflight Manta" sailing along the beach with 2 people with a basic knowledge of landyachting .. and doing the right thing of wearing helmets and seatbelts.
The yacht flipped over just below the point the the water was coming up to,
Now the buckles of the seatbelts were between the 2 people so when the yacht was on the side the top person was suspended by the belt forcing their body weight down blocking the release of either of the buckles.
It was all a bit of a laugh for a while with others helping...it got VERY serious when a wave rolled in over the yacht trapping the bottom person under water for what must have seemed an eternity for them.
The lesson learnt VERY rapidly was make sure you can release the buckle by yourself while being suspended by that belt......
If they hadn't been sailing with many other people around im sure it would have been fatal.
I have seen some idiots that use sailing snap hooks or a climbing carabina as the buckle.
If a yacht is on its side you will need 3 people to lift a 80-90kg person to release a jambed buckle...

PLEASE REMEMBER THIS..... IT COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE

Excellent post Gizmo which certainly illustrates how how a minor mishap can very quickly turn into a disaster situation.

Re seatbelts or preferably body belts:- While there is a ready supply of seatbelts for home builders of land yachts by way of seat belts from defunct motor vehicles, one has to question the suitability of the mechanical buckles for our application.

I can see that the addition of salt water and or sand to these buckles could quickly render most of them inoperable.

For ease of use, quick release and infallability the best I have seen is the buckle as fitted to blokarts. Under tension the belt will snap before the buckle will let go but can be released with the flick of a finger.

I don't think these are proprietry blokart as I have seen similar buckles used on yacht safety harnesses.

Any other takes on the subject????? Cheers Cisco.

Can you show us a photo of a blokart buckle Cisco. I've thought about that problem Gizmo describes, I think it could happen to me with the clips I use.

G'day Folks,
A note on seat belts - they don't use them in europe for the very reason Gizmo describes.

For myself, if I had been wearing my seatbelt on 90 mile beach in the marathon in '96, I may well have been in deep do-do.... Blown into the sea twice with gusty 35+ knot winds. Worst was rounding top mark at the top end of the beach, not enough room to steer out of gybe & hit sea at around 80KPH & straight into wave. When I stood up water was 4 ft deep......

In the WC08 a couple of yachts ended up in the drink, the most spectacular with the pilot chasing the yacht as previously discussed. I did not see any yachts with seat belts.

I did not have a belt on my yacht in RAda Tilly and I did come out of my yacht whilst racing and did get hurt. So you really need to weigh up the pros and cons at each venue, as well as follow local rules.

Having said that I would not sail on Lake Lefroy without a seat belt. The thought of coming out and doing a face dive onto the salt is horrifying

I have previously tried to buy seatbelt parts from auto wreckers but was informed that it was against SA road law.

When I had a ski boat, I had a knee board that had a strap that went over your lap that went through a loop and then velcro'ed back onto itself. It never came undone and was really easy to undo after you came off. I was thinking of just using that.

I must apologize to you cisco as i did not know you had to be a land sailor to be able to make a comment, but with that said this will be my last comment on this forum.
I shall move to other areas that are not so exclusive.

I always go through my bucket of car seatbelts before I fit one. the ones with a button that moves parallel to he belt/clip unit will open when under better than the other type. . In WA wreckers may sell the strap but not the buckle. ( so I was told by a wrecker). Try a metal scrap yard ,they dont care( so I was told by a scrappy)
I just look out for wrecks in the bush, but then I live in Kalgoorlie.
Many years ago I saw a Landyacht that had a plastic buckle from a camping store that had the 2 sided squeeze set up to undo. I thought that was great and got one myself , but 2 years later it snapped when I REALLLLLLLy needed it . yacht went by the name of Wildfire
the 3 seater yacht has a 3 point harness for the passengers, and lap for the pilot. VINDI 4 point with extra padding. all the other yachts just a lapbelt.
Bill talked about the EUropeans and no belts, IN Rada Tilly I talked to the guys from AIRTRACK about belts and explained that in France there are so many rules and laws that asking (telling ) sailors that they should wear a belt would get you told to p*ss off. and that was the reason they dont wear belts

Oh dear, oh dear,
I dont think Kody will take kindly to wearing a three point harness, a set of leather booties, a helmet with full face (muzzle) shield and be lying on her back all at the same time. I will have to rethink this all out.

Joe

But it's amazing what she will do do a piece of tasty cheese!
