It would seem to me that, to prang it, is par for the course and therefore bound to happen. sooner or later Mechanical malfunction seems to play a part, ie bad welding, no one seems to use gussets very much. and to exceed ones ability claims others . I cant really talk as i don't go for speed......but I soon may do just that. What am i in for . What does the inside of a willy willy look like above thirty kph I haven't exceeded 25kph, should i pull the sail on tighter will i live longer by not doing so HELP

I have always tried to make any welds / connections of materials as simple as possible as if its going to break this is where its going to happen or just near the weld.
If you have a look at the landyacht register "Wildfire" was made with aluminium scaff tube and clamps, there were no holes through the tube to weaken it at all.
This was based on the Faze5 design.
Just a thought for your rig have you thought of roller furling to add some level of safety in bad winds? as the sail could be rolled up in seconds.

Im a greatbeliever in keep it simple.
Im quite fascinated by the rig youve used on the previous machines.
I gather from your post that you mainly travel downwind.
If thats the case the Marconi rig ( jib and triangular main) would represent the least efficient rig you could have .
have you considered a simpler lug sail or even a crabclaw rig. these rigs work best on freestanding masts and would be much easier to set , unset , sheet and work.
And of course there is the weight saving. I suspect your rig is way over weight as it is

We are aware of the motorcycle racing dating to 1907 on nearby lake Perkollili.
I would be suprised if motor vehicles could have handled the salt at that time , but tell me more......................

There were several motorcycle speed records broken on Lefroy around about 1971,
Les Sharp had his twin engined (2motor in line)triumph drag bike on the lake along with various other machines. The event lasted a few days, a lot of us went out to watch. I was into motorcycle racing then.

Gidday all,
I owe a little bit of apology er the L.L records I had misinterpreted info from a friend but i think i have it all together now probly a seniors moment
My friend is doing the history of a relation whom rode some pretty mean Nortons and set quite a few records in Britan [late 1939] He visited Australia and rode somewhere on the Coorong as far as we have found out. We don't think he visited L.L.
These records remained on the books until 1973 when at Lake Lefroy, Sydney-sider sponsor with rider B Hindle upon Yamaha machines rewrote the record book
The main records concerned with my friends relly were- class D solo up to 750cc
flying 5 mile @121.13m.p.h. [3mins 28.60's], Standing mile 95.23 m.p.h. [37.80's]
Flying one mile [124.14 m.p.h. [29s]
The above was condensed from Motorcycle Sport September 1973 on the page ...Letters I hope that clears that one up ...cheers....joe

Brian Hindle also beat Giacomo Agostini in 1970-71?? at Oran Park Sydney. This was in the 350 class. The occasion was Agostini's Moto GP Promotional Tour of Australia.

However in the open class in which Ago rode the MV Augusta 500cc, there was only one person who could come near him. This was Geoff (Dickhead) Lucas aboard a BSA 750 Rocket 3. Apart from blue printing the only mods to the engine were a 1mm overbore and a mild cam timing change.

This bike had been doing 176mph down the straight with the front wheel lifting during practice.

Ago could see the talent of Lucas and hung back to see what he could do, but when Lucas dropped out due to tyre failure, he just opened the MV up and lapped the rest of the field at least once.

The MV had this huge diameter, 4 leading shoe front drum brake and the spokes could only have been 2 inches long at most.

We were at the top elbow at the start of the straight and watching Ago, could see theat he had exactly the same line coming through the esses before the elbow. There was a small repair patch in the tarmac which he went over each lap under heavy braking. As he did this a small puff of smoke would come off the tyre. Awesome stuff.

After the elbow he opened it up for the straight and we copped the full blast of the MV's exhaust. Spine shuddering to say the least. Even though it had seperate exhausts for each pot, it sounded more like a jet engine than anything else.

Of course a 3 cylinder 4 stroke will be better balanced and smoother than a 2 or 4 cylinder 4 stroke any day. Cheers Cisco BTW, Was anybody else there that day. Vic??

There were several classes of bikes there , some with fairings and various cc's.
I went to see sharpie as he had a speedway background. He did not have a good time there. First thing that happened was some one knocked of his turbo.
The main problem he had was that he was using his drag bike which had exposed rockers and were manualy oiled. they started to seize and the motor kept breaking befor the end of each run.
I think from memory that he acchived 176mph on one run.Long time ago and the memory fades abit.
Cheers

Aha, So you are saying you were there that day?? Unreal. The slender threads that connect people.

My memory of the day is as vivid as what I described in my previous post. I seem to recall some other races earlier in the day. I also seem to recall that Hindle dropped his bike in one race, then picked it up and rode on to complete the race. I think that might have been in the 250 class though. Cheers Cisco
