i would not have known either if i had not inquired about a wind surfer mast and found that they sell as two parts --- bottom and top. do you recon that we can stop stiring the pot and help each other it is far more constructive
cheers

Yes, we don't use windsurfer type masts on off shore yachts very much.

The only mast top that I know of is the bit that sometimes falls off when you experience a particularly violent 180 degree knock down out near Middleton Reef.

So does anybody have a pic of a "mast top" and can explain it's function?

Hi Cisco,

Here's a bit of a photo and explanation:
http://www.surfsailaustralia.com.au/showProduct/Windsurfing/Masts+Up+To+445+cms/08m400t/Ezzy+Hookipa+Rdm+Wave+Top+Half

Although these are reduced diameter, also known as 'skinny', whereas the sort of masts you guys use are the cheaper "Standard Diameter" or 'normal' size.

Basically our masts come in two halves so you can transport them more easily. There's a male ferrule that joins the two bits together, you slide the two halves together and put a wrap of electrical tape on the join to keep it together while rigging and stop the sand getting in. Downhaul tension keeps the mast together while sailing.

So for a normal 430 mast, the mast top will be about 215 cm long, and so will the base (plus a bit for the male ferrule).

Thank YOU nebbian, expensive little beasties aren't they? So would one of these be used atop a normal fibreglass mast lower to have a stiffer top or would it be carbon fibre all the way?

Times have changed Cisco
It's carbon fibre all the way now, although the mast I linked to is 91% carbon, the rest is fibreglass. Normally the fibreglass goes on the outside so you get better impact resistance - 100% carbon masts are notorious for breaking.

Yep they're quite expensive, we try to justify it any way we can, but you get what you pay for. Those Ezzies are the ducks nuts, I've got two complete Ezzy masts (tops and bottoms), they take a beating and keep on ticking

The reason I thought it might be useful is that you might have a mast bottom section lying around waiting for a compatible top. Then by picking up the top you'd have a complete mast.

Well neb it sounds like these 91% masts could be useful on a land yacht. Have you got one 4.8m long that you would like to loan me for some experimental work.

If you don't ask, you don't get. Good to be able to do this any time of day or night, Eh Joe? If you do the work you get the rewards eventually.

TP1's mini hs a standard diameter, 30% carbon 460 mast. that is equivalent in stiffness to his Alloy cl 5mast. H bought it NEW from a windsurfer shop having a clearance sale for $50,
isnt he clever
