Well after several seasons crewing on a 44' Div 1 yacht and dabling in cats and windsurfers I decided it was time to try something new.

So I got the plans of a Paul Day designed Pacific Magic landyacht and have now finally started to build it.

I got most of the components of the frame and the fibreglass seat from the president of the Adelaide Landyacht Club and have tack welded them together ready for a mate in the CFS who builds ultralights and gyrocopters to weld together for me.

Now it has been welded up and cold galv'ed

Next step is getting the rear axles, mast and wheels.

Thanks for your email David, I have mounted the steering bracket on the back of the mast hound as you suggested. You can just see it in the second photo.

Cheers

Phil

Its good to knowthat some of my designs are still out there. I assume the seat is one from the designthat Martin Bell and I created . I never did get even a offer of a royalty on that part of the design either. Make sure its really well built around the bolt points as you can get into a really hard 360 spin and tear a seat in half.
Cheers and good sailing

The sttering should be fittedto the chassis, not the mast step,in orderto reduce the chances of an ankle injuryin a crash.it should be a sliding fitthat is welded to allow it to snap off or bend in a collision. All this is in the original instructions and plans.

Looking at the photo of that seat reminded me of just how keen and supple i used to be. I cant even squeeze into one of those seats now. I havent put on a kilo over 15 years but the new seat ive shaped has lots of generous curves and recesses to fit my tired body. the body on AUS230 is a skinny thing that Vic never seems to get comfy in. I'll see if I can put some photos up.

I like the look of the new seat. Looks as if you're not quite as recumbent as you would be in the old one, is that the case? Does it fit the PM chassis?

The new mini looks interesting too. How does that steering system feel? It looks as if you have to twist your ankles rather than just push.

(Oh... and remind me not to apply for the position of test pilot )

yes we are beginning to sit up . the old PM set needed a good cushion for your head. the new seat doesnt. when sailing in the old seat through a creek or puddle you would cop it in the face . the new seat has a big fat nose to throw it off and doesnt strain the body . you actually relax at speed . when the yacht is balanced right you can take your feet off the steering and alter course by bending your knees to shift your weight.
the mini steering is completely different. Yuo roll rather than twist your feet, it takes about 2 minutes to get used to it, and you can steer with one foot. again when the yacht is balanced, you can sail with your feet off the pedals. Cheers Paul AUS3

Paul if my seat was anymore confitable I would go to sleep in it, my main problem has been bending the bloody axles but I think I have now fixed that problem by upgrading to class 12 bolts and tenstioning the bolts up to prevent the shear forces, gave it a hard time last weekend and everything ended up fine.
cheers

Paul, do the new seats fit on the pacific magic chassis?
If so how much would you sell one for?

sorry mate. they fit a T chassis.the PM seats were purpose designed for the Y chassis. The seat you have is version 4.0. I stopped building Y frames because the wheel alignment tended to drift out all the time.A T is much easier to whip up and less stress is placed om the seat.

Getting there, the chassis is out at David Rose's place as he is making the mast and axles for me. He had to get the tube from NSW. I'll be picking it all up on the 15th (payday) and then I'll order the sail. Hopefully will be ready for the first ALYC sail in October.

Oh by the way I now have my sail number. From now on I can also be referred to as "AUS 50". Nice round number, I'll have to add it to my signature

I am wondering how you can have a sail number 50? I would have thought that by know all the lower numbers would have been issued or are they re issued later on to some one else?

I saw the number allocation spreadsheet the other day. I think different groups of numbers have been allocated to different clubs, so 50 is in the higher range of the ALYC numbers. I had the choice of several in the 40's but liked 50.

Pick up my mast boom and axles from David next Saturday and pay the deposit for my Sail from Ken O'Brien Sails. He's making it from 4.4 oz , resin finish, racing dacron with battons, sail number and bag for less than I was expecting to pay

Make sure that the sail area is measured laid flat AND includes the area of the pocket. I had heard that Ken wasnt making sailsfor landyachts at the moment. the last ones we had from him were in 1993 and they are still going strong. travis bartlet came second at the last SA champs with one of those old sails. How many dollars?
