Hi All!

My name is Shona and I'm the Engineering Program Manager at local Perth-based charity Dreamfit Foundation.

Dreamfit builds and modifies equipment for people with disabilities using innovative engineering solutions. We work with university engineering students and engineering companies to fulfil dreams for people with disabilities.

Some of our past projects have included a hand-controlled motorcycle suitable for paraplegics, a wheelchair accessible abseiling tower, a bike for a young boy born without arms and a sit ski for the Disabled Water Skiers Association. More information available at our website www.dreamfit.com.au

We were recently given 3 old windsurfers and so had the idea of converting this to some sort of land sailing device instead suitable for use by people with disabilities. We have engineering industry supports on board, we have the students lined up but what we really need is someone with passion/ knowledge in land yachting

If you are interested in possibly helping out or would like more information please contact me - Shona 0403 324 897 or [email protected]

Thanks!

Hello Shona, welcome to seabreeze...
When you mention disabilities can you be a little more specific with what your seeking....

Would the people be able to use hand steering or would foot steering be more suitable?
Are they able to pull on a rope of say 5kg?
What age are you looking for?
Are they able to take instruction from a coach / instructor?
Where would you sail?
Most problems can be worked through as like sailability has. www.sailability.org/au/australia/

Here is a link to the construction of what is regarded as a starter yacht the LLMini is simple and easy to build. Let your construction crew have a look through this thread and see what they think...

Let us know what the needs are and we will work through them with you and your crew.

(Just a request, can you please remove the posting you have placed on the land yacht register as that a photo album record of yachts rather than a discussion thread)

Hi Shona, this sounds great, I'm sure you'll get plenty of help on here. I've seen pictures on the Blokart website of wheelchair sailors using them so I think landyachts would be perfect for some disabilities.

I hope you don't mind but I have deleted your post in the register, as Gizmo said that is intended just to be a register for pictures of different types of landyachts. Besides this is certainly a subject worthy of its own thread!

Gday Shona, could you PM me to introduce yourself I have helped to customize a mini landyacht before and really enjoyed the challenge. the big part of the challenge is to make customized parts to fit the individual. withe the mini yachts we build it is not hard or expensive , but it does need individual attention to each person.
I do think I can help though. cheers , Paul Day
can I suggest taking your phone/email off you original post as it does get targeted by scammers. Its safer to use the email icon at the top of each post
