Here is the link to "Jays Landyacht"
www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=39316
These guys built a land yacht from an old tramopline frame
Have a close read of the thread as it was mentioned as a class 5 yacht.
Class 5 yachts actually have VERY strict design rules and need to be built to these to compete as a Class 5 Yacht

Yup , I recall he posted some detailed plans as well . Why are you planning to build in Ally?. Jays yacht wold be out of the basic MIni specs but certainly built in the spirit of the class

well i have been looking at different types of yachts and those pic's of jays yacht caught my eye for some reason,, i'm not looking to race anytime soon and am building one just for the fun aspect of sailing, i've had my days of racing and i'm not really into racing anymore.....
why alu, well a marine builder said that he'd like to have a go at doing one just for the exersice and he only deals in marine grade alu that's why...
being new to this "sport" i have been looking at lots of pic's and plans to get ideas from, if and when and i say if and when i do decide to go racing then i'll go class 5 or something like it,, i was going to just buy a blokart but the cost out ways the desire for 1 of them at the moment,,,,i have a holiday home down at the foot of york penn here in south australia at a place called marion bay and there is a beach aprox 40 mins drive from there that at low tide would make a great place for a bit of fun sailing, i try to get to marion bay as often as i can and hope to someday retire there, so i want something that i can transport easily int/ on the back of my twin cab ute to and from marion bay and from my old home town of port augusta where i know of many dry salt pans that also would be good for a bit of a blast... the size of yacht i am planning to build at this stage is 2.5 meters long by 1.5 meters wide and will be using mostly wind surfing sails mast and wish bone boom. i am what you migh call bit on the heavy side so i was trying to keep the weight down but still retain strength so went with the alu option as it offers lightness and strength, i'll be using 20" bmx bike wheels all round as that is what i have on hand, i have designed a sliding mast bracket and t bar steering bracket so that all is ajustable so that i can position the mast for best performance (i hope) both ajustable brackets (steering and mast) will be held in position by grub screws or bolts of some sort.....thanks for the jays link...
cheers

If your a bit on the heavy side the 20" bmx is the way NOT to go. you will be dissapointed with the results
If your building it 1.5m wide the 2.5 will be too long.
I would suggest that the BLOKART /MINI dimensions with a stiff mast and up to 5m sail would give a more fulfilling outcome

Hey BB, if I can take this off topic for a second, Marion Bay is my favourite place on earth!! A mate of mine's brother used to part own the shop there and had shares in the tavern, I believe (John Smith).

(and to get back on topic-ish)

Theres a dry salt lake just behind Marion Bay that the new sub division over looks that we used to drag people around on behind cars, do you think we can sail on that??

Tony not wanting to burst the bubble in landyacht design... but i think almost every combination of yacht and wheels have been tried, wire spoked bike wheels for the rear fail fast.
The yachts sailing now although look simple have been pefected with time. and trust me there have been some spectacular incidents involved with some designs over the years.
It cost about the same to make a good yacht as it does a dud.

Jay's landyacht is quite a bit larger than a mini, and uses a cut down A Class Cat wing mast and sail, it would be underpowered with a windsurfer rig unless it was rather large and I dont think that its chassis would cope with an unstayed rig.
When I first built my larger alum chassis (pics are on the same page as Jay's) I loosely based the size on that of Jay's (it just fits into the length of the tray of my Rodeo ute and will fit into the width if you take the rear wheels off, usually I just sit them up on the side of the tray) mine uses a cut down Paper Tiger Catamaran rig and sail, its a bit more flexable than an A Class Rig. Havn't had a chance to sail it much yet and hav't had time to catch up with Jay to test against his, he has been building a tri as well as another landyacht, If I get in contact with him in the near future I ask to see if he can put up some additional info about his yacht. In the mean time I recon you should have a go at the Lefroy Mini, simpler to build, easier to get sailing and suitable for use on smaller areas.

Great to see some more intrerest in this sport.

ok firstly, marion bay, there is a new subdivision just on the way into marion bay from warooka, if that is the dry lake you're thinking of then i don't think so not any more most of it is being sold sadly enough, there is a dry lake in innes national park but am not sure if parks and wildlife would let anyone on there as it's within the park, the beach i was talking about is the main beach at corny point with is almost dry at low tide, i do recall at warooka a sign on a shed saying york penn land sailing but haven't seen it there lately, although i haven't been down for a month or so...there are a lot of dry salt pans out on the yorkies crossing road which is out the back of port augusta many of then are just on the side of the road,, next time i'm down at the bay i'll check and see if that dry salt bed can be used and let you know, another place would be gleesons landing beach at low tide but it ca be soft in places, has claimed the odd 4wd from time to time,,,,,
next the yacht, yes well it sounds like good advice guess i'll go for the mini but will still stay with the aluminium and change the wheels to something smaller, the builder suggested sack truck wheels but i think i'll go with wheel barrow type, i have got all the plans for the mini from the other thread,,,thanks guys
bit red faced now

Ah ok, no I was talking about the original subdivision and then the newer one on the other side of the caravan park. BTW which subdivision is your place in??

Now I think if it, it was probably the one in Innes that we mucked around on. It was quite a good size as I recall, but that was many many years ago. Theres also a paddock on the right hand side just before you get to MB where a guy lands his ultralight that he takes people for joyrides in. When we went there I though it would be firm enough for a land yacht and that was huge.

The only time I have ever laid eyes on a blokart was in Warooka a couple of years ago. There were a couple parked in someone's backyard for sale. That was actually what triggered me to get the old PM plans out of moth balls and build mine. I assume they must be used down there somewhere.

Hi beach ball, Sorry your other thread seems to have been hijacked. My apologies.

There is a blokart on E Bay with a current bid of $1500. It appears to have been barely used. The sail looks like it is a 3m which would only frustrate you. Bidding ends 20/03/09. I wouldn't be paying much more than that for it as a 4m sail is going to cost you about $700.

$2300 would nearly buy you a brand new kart. Cheers Cisco

yeh just as you go into marion fro warooka the guy that owns the land on the left has sub'd it all and is selling it off like hot cakes, it;s on the corner of warooka road and corny point road just before the serv/general store....
our place is near the beach/ c'van park, on the road to penguin point, if you know that area,,,,
no i think i'll have a go at the mini, going to do 1 in alu and 1 in steel, question....going to go with fallshaw wheels for the rear but am still thinking of using the 20" bmx wheel and forks for the front,, what do you think of that, i could get hold of some 16" forks and wheels but have the 20" on hand.....
oh umm next time i'm down the bay( due to go soon, getting a bit stresses) i'll ask about using the lake in the park because there are a couple there, 1 if further into the park almost to pondie bay, i doubt that they will but guess it doesn't hurt to ask, will be going to ranger hq anyway to get park pass
cheers

cisco, don't worry about the thread being hi jacked, don't mind all the chit chat about stuff,
i have a mate who i was talking with last night about what i'm doing land yacht wise and he said that there is a large salt flat out the other side of viginia, those south aussies will know where viginia is, he thinks that i might be good for a bit of a sail, also he has asked me to put up on here a request, he would like to know if anyone has mini class yacht that they would like to part with (sell) he's self employed in a new business and wouldn't have to time to build one as nearly all of his time is going into his business at the moment, which i guess is understandable, so if there is i'll pass on the details, it would have to be here is South Aust. and in Adelaide preferably...I have offered to build one once i have mine done and dusted but he's rather keen to have a go, so i have asked the question as requested....
cheers

There's a small one by Inneston but they cut a huge trench across in back when they mined gypson there. I think its the further one.

Make sure you mention to the rangers that its a completely environmentally freindly sport, and that if you join the ALYC your landyacht will be road registered. (at least it can be anyway )

Re wheels. preference would be wheelbarrow all round. 16 or 20 " is ok but not as good. (tried it) . It is very hard to get good trolley wheels in Aus. the only good ones are to be found on blokarts( they are very good).
Hillsy re registration in SA. Came across the details on a SA govmt web site.
conditions included Port Gawlwer beach only and a prerequesite was membership to ALYC.
Makes fascinating reading.
sorry dont have link

Wheels. A company here in Bundaberg, Enmach Industries, has wheels that they import from Whangerai in NZ that are the original blokart wheels.

Enmach make a number of plastic products some of which are large plastic trailers for use behind ride on mowers and the like. The wheels on these are the older blokart variety. The plastic in these appears to be a bit softer and pliable than the current blokart wheels. I find the current blokart wheels to be more brittle. I have shattered two recently when the edge of the rims clipped the edge of a concrete path.

The Enmach wheels take the same 6202 bearings as the blokart and are quite cheap to buy at various bearing shops.

I have been buying the wheels from Enmach for $60.50 with tyre and tube but no bearings. This compares with blokart wheels with tyre and tube only for about $75 and the 8" Fallshaw wheels for $44 with tyre, tube and pressed metal ball bearings.

Enmach has some other really cool products too such as poly plastic water and diesel tanks for fitting to camper trailers, side or underslung fitting plus a roof top cargo module with built in spot lights. Pricing seems very reasonable too.

To get a catalogue with prices, freecall 1800 502 267, fax 07 4153 0900 or email [email protected]. They do not appear to have a website.

If you right click on the topic or thread name, the menu gives an option to copy the short cut, then when you get to the piont in your post where you want the link, right click again and select paste.

I think I got that right but it is all right clicky stuff anyway.

Edit:- Yep that's how you do it and here is the link www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=38203
