,,, october long weekend spent touring around Port Augusta and Whyalla in north of south australia,,, the clay pans on the out skirts of Port Augusat are for the most dry and rock hard, surprising concideing the amount of rain they had, anyway they are dry and hard enough to drive on,, the clay pans are on Yorkies crossing road te best one is where the power lines cross over the road,
Found another spot on the road to Whyalla, between Port Augusta and Whyalla about 66 k's from port augusta turn left onto Port Bonython road,, it's a good road about 20 k's or so along this road look for Cuttlefish Drive on the right it leads to a beach which at low tide has about 5 or so k's of sailable hard packed beach, access to the beach is over sand so beare it's soft until you get onto the beach but there is a car park of sorts if you don't have 4wd,, nothing there though so you'd need to bring everything if you were to camp there,,,,good caravan parks at either port augusta and whyalla which is not far....best check the tides for whyalla before sailing this beach it's tidal by the looks but hard and fast....

Lake Gilles has water in it bt it's not deep so some warm weather should dry it out nicely the track in is a bit rutted in places and soft too but with care it's ok
