looks to me like an old diy lateen canoe sail that I had found in a barn. I have attached the mast quite securely to the headstock of my diy kite trike. Unknown origin of the sail. The sail appears to my untrained eye to be a flat cut. Being fascinated by wind power this seemed like an excelent idea to me, having seen this kind of rig in action on youtube powering small watercraft. I am sadly unfarmiliar with sailing thus far, though i am determined to get my canoe or trike powered up in this manner. I am looking for an educated and experienced assessment of my contraption so far. I am obviously going to try it out when i have time to go to my favorite large field but am i missing something vital here? im not looking for performance, just functionality. Thank you for your time ;)

I think i that im going to have a go at this. really amazing entry level stuff. Im sure that eventually this is going to cost as much as my kite collecting habit. Anyone tried this yet?

Are you sure it wasnt just a shade sail?

the sail was attached to the boom/gaff assembly, so???Upon further study this looks like an ill informed attempt to build a canoe sail rig that appeared in popular mechanics years ago. the construction, materials and dimensions are the same as those printed in the article. the craft can definitley move downwind and it can approach a decent reach but the tired old "sail" performs about as well as a shade sail :/
I have had a blast though, getting a very basic working knowledge of sail craft and am definitley going to build a suitable sail for this setup. Sail construction is a fascinating study and right up my alley :)
I would ask of the wisdom of the group here if this kind of setup at 45'sq will be suitable for simple navigation in 12-15mph winds? If not, can someone reccomend a different sort of sail rig to research? i would like to be able to transfer it between my leeboard/rudder equipped canoe and my kite trike.
