Was talking with a friend at a party the other night and he showed me this app on his phone.

It recorded his tracks and the interesting thing about it is that when in network range or on WiFi, when you scroll to areas on the map they download and become resident in the phone memory.

This means when out of phone range the GPS in your device will show your position on whatever map segments you have on your phone.

It has a bunch of other interesting features too.

maps.me does the same, at least on land. Used it to drive in France and Scotland to great effect. Each section for download was only about 70 MB, so not too bad when in range or wi-fi.

Ovital seems to be more about satellite imagery and position fixing than maps but I think it can interface Google Maps.

My friend showed me how he had been using it for marine navigation and it looked impressive.

For what it's worth the full name of the company is
Beijing Ovital Software Company.

Will give it a go.
