We had a race last Saturday and Lydia's Defiance was part of the fleet and she looked lovely under sail

After 162 minutes of sailing we crossed the line about 40 seconds behind her but to be fair at one stage she had a decent over us I think we must have had a lucky break to catch up to her as I have looked at the specs of both boats and the displacement is similar, she is two feet longer, we both were carrying a similar amount of sail and out of the water she appears to have a fair bit less wetted area but I slipped mine in late September and she might have a dirty bottom so that migh be helping us a bit

The course from memory started as a beat in probably 10 knots of breeze and then a reach, a broad reach where Defiance flew a assy which prompted us to hoist a symmetrical for about 10 minutes but we also left the head sail up as the wind direction was a bit a undecided and they were both setting well and when the wind came forward of the beam we dropped the spinnaker and reached down to the turning mark in front and from there it was a beat back up the river in probably 15 to 20 knots where Defiance lifted her skirt and outpointed and out paced the rest of the fleet to pull well ahead

We were lucky to catch her up again and as we rounded the last two marks we stayed within about 100 meters of her before crossing the line

It was a great day on the water and It was good to have another boat in our small but varied fleet

What a great post loved the photos

great to see defiance out doing what she was designed for. phrf is what it is a way of awarding trophies to people who sail badly this is a good thing for clubs as it keeps the members involved but has no reflection on the ability of the sailors or the boats .
the only way to have real racing in a mixed fleet is through a measurement formula ie irc or the soon to be tested in qld ams at least you know how you did even if you arent happy with your rating
sad to see politics comes to the fore and spoils good sailing in tassie as well

It's why I don't bother with clubs period.

Keep your club politics out of Seabreeze please. And re-posting a FB message from what I'll assume is a private club page is extremely poor form too.

Not totally sure if that was Don's sole intention but they are nice photos.

Everyone just wants to go sailing on a roughly-level playing field. At Port Huon, even in 30 knots, the playing field is flat. Shifting left and right, up and down in pressure, but the sea state is level. Handicaps offset sea state.

Does anyone have any photos of yesterday's twilight? The fleet finished very close together.

Lydia had fun. I had fun. The word is that I am still not welcome. I can live with that. We are just going for a sail after work on Thursday in one of the prettiest places in the world to be. What could be better than that?

It would be nice to see HG's hard work complete are living again.

And before any says anything about the tack the sail was made for a new boom we gave coming so the cut back was made to that not the old sheer line gooseneck which has a low bearing point

Lydia any chance for us laymen on explaining the two booms and how it effects the sail please

If you look closely at that tack fitting the pintle for the gooseneck is very low in the boom and above the horns on the mast.
The sail was measured and cut to fit the gooseneck fitting on the mast not the hieght of the boom.
So presently i just need to riase the sail alittle to clear the top of the boom.
All mainsails should have what is known as a "cutback" where the tack position is moved back to accomodate the fitting to the gooseneck.
It will different for different boats and set ups.
The standard cut back for a All yachtspar gooseneck is 75mm.
Without the cutback the sail will bunch up at the tack.
too much cutback puts too much load on the boltrope or first slug and will tear there.
So I have just been lashing iot avoid the problem

Thanks for that I never knew about cutback sail makers must just do a standard 75mm they never ask .
if I wanted to change my boom from roller furling would you know where to get the fittings? Drives me nuts not being able to use the vang when reefed
