I'm completely clueless about this. I have a Standard Horizon GX2100 VHF that came with the boat. It doesn't have an integrated GPS, but is connected to a rather old chartplotter. The lat and long appear on the VHF screen when both are turned on.

I have the Shipfinder app on my wifi iPad and it doesn't appear. Could that be lag from the apps servers or could my signal not be broadcasted? Is Shipfinder is for entertainment purposes only?

If if I am broadcasting a AIS signal, how do I register or update my details from the previous owner?

I take it it I need a AIS receiver to see the AIS signal of others.

Here's the GX2100 manual link. www.manualslib.com/manual/652968/Standard-Horizon-Matrix-Gx2100.html

The GX2100 is an AIS Receiver. Your old Chartplotter is providing the gps input that shows the lat & long.
If you turn the GX2100 to AIS mode you should receive info on boats in your area. It'll show as a couple of concentric circles with AIS transmitting boats identified. You can set the alarm to go off if any cone within a designated distance. Check the aerial connection too.

Shipfinder is also receiving information, not transmitting. It's not just for entertainment. You don't have an AIS transmitter, that's why you don't show up on shipfinder.

Thanks Bushdog. I feel like an idiot for not checking the manual. That makes sense now.
