I nearly fell into a trap today - I'm going for my Coxswains NC ticket and a medical is required by AMSA.
I found out that not all General Practices can do an "AMSA medical". Those that can, charge about $520!
The thing is, for a Coxswains NC an "AMSA medical" is not what is required, only an eye test certificate (form 542) and a medical fitness test (form 559).

Turns out the full AMSA medical is only required for International tickets.
I rang the local GP and told them exactly what I needed, they can do the two tests for just under half the price!

So if anyone is thinking of getting their Coxswains NC ticket, be careful what you ask for when booking with a GP, as they might try and stiff you for the full medical - including chest Xray!

I had to renew my master 5 a few years back in cairns a quick health check was all that was needed cost me $80 and I just tick all the boxes NO which is mostly true. I understand that our AMSA tickets are not recognised internationally.

You were renewing your ticket that's why you paid less.
A medical for a new ticket is more thorough.
And anyway, there is less of you than there is of me - so it should be cheaper
